Just take a gander at law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
You will find oodles of stupids moving in and out of that system every day.

I mean, how can you not support free health care? Are you stupid?
It's all about keeping rights and responsibilities in balance.

If socialised medicine is a right it must be paired with the responsibility to practice basic preventive care. A minimum amount of daily exercise, keep your weight within an acceptable range agreed upon by your local GP and keep a firm grip on your intake of vices like cigarettes, alcohol or pretty much anything else that, when taken to excess, is harmful to both the individual and the health budget.
Uh...I never said that.
Yeah.

People who advocate for free health care hardly ever say anything even remotely like that.
He means he literally did not post anything about free healthcare. Product Placement did. You're attributing one person's post to someone else.

Completely agree, the whole "lost my faith in humanity" thing is in itself retarded. REALLY stupid things only happen in very small doses to a vast minority of people.

I think a lot of people misinterpret ignorance as stupidity. For example, not knowing the location of a country or a continent, is not a sign of stupidity, it's a sign of ignorance. No amount of intelligence will ever bring you the answer if you are simply unaware or unfamiliar with the answer/topic.

there's a difference between being wise, and being smart.

I've known a few, in my day, but not very many. It's usually more of a willful, deliberate ignorance than straight-up literal stupidity. I'd say the vast majority of people are of average intelligence. Which...well...imagine that, right? The average is average.
That is approximately how it works.
Or at least, the vast majority are within a standard variation of average.

OT: sometimes people will persist in doing stupid things, despite the fact the solution would seem obvious. This makes people believe stupidity is unfortunately common. I feel that way myself at times.

I envy your fortune with all of my being.

Let me entertain you with a story about a twit named Cory. Now this 15 year old future hockey star(jock that actually thought he could make pro league level.) Was in a highschool academic level business class with me. We had these weekly assigments to read a business article over the weekend, cut it out, sumerize it, and reflect on it. All in all very simple, quick (only 15 minutes of work as the teacher wasnt asking for essay answers.) Cory never oncce completed this asignment. Most days the boy would show up on monday empty handed, some days with a piece of paper, fewer days he would have a pen to match the paper. Some days he even brought in a cut out newspaper article. Usually his excuse was that he couldnt find any business articles and he would laugh in a way that fully expressed lack of intelligence. One day the teacher provided a newspaper, pen and paper for Cory. It took all of one minute for Cory to lose the pen, accidentally rip the paper and in the minutes following he ate the newspaper.

I had four long years of sharing classes with that moron and I can confirm he was totally devoid of any thought processes during that entire time. This is just one of many Cory stories that I have. In my first year I always forgot his last name so when I had to refer to him I would say "you know Cory, about yay high, dark hair, stupid..." I was always cut off after saying stupid with a response of recognition. "Oh him."

Let me know if you want to hear some colorful army stories I have a few of those too.

Apologies for spelling I'm using a new phone with spellcheck turned off.

Questioning the meaning of a word means there is something going on in his brain.
No...I remember plenty of idiots back in school like the one described there, they are perfectly aware of what the word means and are only trying to draw attention to themselves by attemping a smartass joke.

I don't believe there are huge number of stupid people, rather there are many people who feel insecure about their own intelligence or uniqueness in the world and so dismiss others as stupid with the implication that they themselves aren't, that they're better than the average person. This is particularly common in politics where often the other side is always the side of ignorance who haven't seen the light yet.
^^^ This. Well spoken.

Yes yes, obvious subject line designed to draw attention. Here's the real thing:

People complain about stupid people all the time. But I almost never meet someone that functionally retarded. I go to work in an office, do my job, come home, watch TV/play games/whatever. If there's a party or meetup going on that I'm interested in, I'll go. Simple as that.

The thing is, I never meet people that I really hate. I see so much complaining online about stupid facebook status updates and stupid conversations with friends, but I never find myself engaging with that type of person. I know that the recent election made a lot of people very confrontational, but not one facebook friend I had posted that kind of reaction. Nobody gloating, nobody complaining.

So why is it that I have some kind of anti-stupid field around me? Yeah, I've met stupid people, especially when I was working retail, but despite how common they are, they're practically a legend to me.
I've had this discussion with a friend who works a call center. He insists that stupid people are all over the place, and that it's simply our contained little lives that keep us from seeing them all the time. I mean, you work in an office (a nice job I'd assume, I mean a little office space, but nice none the less in that it's good pay for desk work), which is a job stupid people generally have a harder time gravitating towards, you play games and watch TV (which involves little to no outside human interaction), and then you hang out with friends. I live a very similar life only replace work with school, and I'd imagine it's the same for most escapists (hmm.. double meaning on that one... win). The fact is, the people we hang out with, we do so because we like them and they aren't idiots, and they're likely not to hang out with idiots either (at least not regularly, at a party having idiots around can be amusing). So, basically your life lacks any knowledge of idiots because you don't go out on the street talking to random people to find one.

Still, I've only met a few stupid people (though I will admit any time I leave my windows open while my neighbors are having a party about 4/5 conversations will sound retarded... but I blame that on the drank... Still... being drunk never stopped me from getting philosophic, but my friends have expressed on several occasions that they hang out with me because I'm always talking absurdly deep (or about hot girls... my brain shuts right off for even mildly cute girls, which makes talking to them a bit more difficult).

The thing is, I can easily imagine stupid people, I think we all can. I mean, the bible belt (poorest part of the country) does keep voting republican. So maybe they are out there in the massive, zombie-like hordes that we've heard of in legend... or maybe they're made up by the media to make us hate our fellow man, and it's also entirely likely that, as JoJo put it, the concept of 'stupid people' is something formed in the insecure mind of your average human.

Hard to say really, only one way to find out. Shame you're not an anthropologist friend, I'd suggest a field study.

First impressions are everything. Your mistake is that you've actually gotten to know the people in your life, even if it's only a little bit. From my experience, most people are only labeled stupid by people who catch them at a bad time, such as trying to recite information they haven't (but are still expected to have) learned, and are now considered stupid because of one event one time.

Now, for all those who have been labeled stupid because they refuse to learn ("God didn't put it in the bible, therefore it doesn't exist!" or my favorite "Learning about computers is only for nerds! Now, fix my machine, worthless nerd!"), I feel the term is somewhat accurate. Yes, these people might be smart (or at least average) in their particular area of interest, but willfully remaining ignorant of other topics for vague or flimsy reasons (e.g. it's not trendy to learn about) doesn't really equate to smart in my book.

Mostly, they exist in the minds of people that read too much Failblog.
It's VERY easy to take that kind of point of view, because it means avoiding introspection altogether while making yourself seem REALLY smart.

I manage a privately owned game store in Michigan, and let me assure you my friend that stupid people do exist. Every day I have to constantly explain the concept of sales tax, and I even had a customer return a copy of Madden 12 claiming it was defective. He couldn't figure out how to pass the ball... which is just the B button.

That's actually pretty awesome you don't see these people, and I'm happy for your good fortune dude!

I find it awfully ironic that the people I most often see complaining about the world being full of stupid people are most often people who aren't all that mentally endowed themselves. Which leads me to believe that these masses of "stupid people" that they're seeing everywhere are only stupid so that they have a basis for believing they're smarter than the average person. I have a friend who does this a lot, I catch him often trying to spin people's actions to make them look like utter morons, and he obsesses over these people claiming they're everywhere.

Most of the people that he harps on are either just not good at a subject, not well educated in areas he is, or just did something stupid. So many people will extrapolate from a lapse of judgment and assume that the person doing it is an idiot. Once while putting together a tv stand I accidentally put in the wooden connector things (There is a better word for them, but I don't know what it is) in the wrong way 3 times, requiring me to get them out with a knife every time. It is a stupid mistake, and if a lot of people just saw me do that they'd probably think I was stupid. However, I'm getting 80s-90s in all of my classes in university with minimal effort and took advanced placement courses in high school so I am pretty sure I'm not a complete idiot.

*looks at other posts in thread* Okay, so I'm evidently not the only person with this opinion.

Everybody thinks everybody is stupid except themselves. They're wrong, but that's because they're all stupid. Except me.

your education please a HUGE role in what social groups you encounter. You might rarely spot stupid people but you don't interact with them. Now I think stupid is a wrong term, they are generally mis or ill informed. And in the lower education circles they are way more common, because lower education suggests that you probably care less about information. Note that these people would probably not even regard of themselfs as "stupid". While in the meantime Stephen hawking would probably consider 99.9% of the world as stupid or at the very least less intelligent.

Chew on that one. me and you, are part of someone's "large crowd of stupid people" but don't worry, it doesn't matter in the slightest.

I have absolutely no idea how that happened although I'm pretty sure human stupidity was involved.

Please don't bring out the sandwich, Bob.
