There's a big part of your problem.
Whilst the majority of people are fine, or at least not openly annoying/douchebags, if you work in a job that involves a lot of public interaction... lets say retail for example... then the stupid comes up frequently and it becomes far more noticeable.

Ive met a few stupid people, if you are not meeting any in your daily life, I suggest keeping it that way.

you really only find those kinda people when you really interact with others on a level more than general conveasation or something about video games or movies.

Dive into religion, politics, sexuality, afterlife, race, science or just about anything that the common person can't just know. That people have to dive into a research before they can make a guess and not sound stupid.

thats where the stupid people come from, someone who will jump into a politic conversation and not have any knowledge on their candiate or their policies.

How I envy you all who have not met legitimately stupid people. In no particular order, I've met, studied or worked with many of them, including but not limited to:

A woman who adamantly held that the moon landing was faked, her argument being that she'd never heard about anyone going to the moon since -69, thus it was just a publicity stunt. This in the face of a "list of people who have been to the moon since -69", which was fake too, of course.

A man who could not grasp that a "public school" is not a public place, and therefore his right of free speech does not extend to handing out racist propaganda at one.

A man with no drivers license (done the test 5 or 6 times, I forget), who owned 6 cars. The kind of cars that get sold cheaply to new drivers rather than being sold for scrap value because the owner wants to be nice. He bought these, because his equally stupid father insisted that it "was a good deal".

A man I took a hunting course together with was half-blind. This he neglected to mention until the firearms practice started...I should add, this man owns his own land, and intends to hunt on it. half blind!

Those are just off the top of my head. Stupidity abounds.

No, he doesn't have a mental disability. He is just that stupid.
I bet he's better at art than you
Ding!

I office next to a college graduate (mechanical engineer) that still don't know his multiplication tables. (He has trouble with his "7"s.) But he is far from stupid.

There's plenty of discussion here about dumb vs. ingorant. While there are physioligically imparied thinkers out there, I think that the label of "stupid" gets applied most when the labeler doesn't have the same set of value and experiences as the labeled. As an engineer I am considered smarter than the Texas back country Technicians I work with. But that's just the book learning. If/when the zombie apocalypse hits I'll be the dumb one because I don't have the basic survival skills to defend myself.

It's just an unfortunate label we give to those who say or do something we consider less than intelligent.

Thing is, I know some very well educated people whom I actually consider quite stupid due to particular views they hold. It's usually when people take it upon themselves to be racist, homophobic or sexist that they begin to fall into my definition of stupidity.

Most people react very violently to statements counter to their own belief system. There is a lot of buzz about how the US may have faked the moon landing to discourage the Russian M1 missile program (well ahead of us at the time). I'm actually undecided on this conspiracy theory--it is a fascinating to consider as historical fiction, if nothing else. Kennedy said "let's do it!" and we got Apollo 11 there in under a decade with computers dumber than a digital watch. Nasa has been tasked to get back to the moon, has a longer lead time, and is still having trouble.

EDIT: Oops. I re-read your post. I now step down (stupidly) from my soap box. I see you are citing the lack of belief in subsequent missions due to poor personal memory as the act of stupidity. It would seem odd that she didn't retain any of the excitement around Apollo 13.

I'm not into carrying around gold bars--I have a bad back. But is somebody offered me a deal for some gold bars cheap, I'd be interested. I'd be stupid to pass up the deal.

I once bowled next to a guy who was legally blind. Seems to me if the guy owns a gun and wants to go hunting on his land away from other people, he should be able to. How did he do in the class?

I've gotta say, if I don't walk very carefully, I walk into stupid people all the time, or maybe that's just Camden? Hanging out in my own circles, stupid people tend to be a minority, but then I am a student. There's literally a barrier for entry there. If I go by random folk on the street, they seem to be everywhere... (Seriously, have you listened to their conversations?)

Personally, I don't like people who's personalities are stupid.

Yeah, I've met stupid people, especially when I was working retail, but despite how common they are, they're practically a legend to me.
"If you can't spot the sucker in the room, it's probably you?"
It could be you've just made friends with people who aren't stupid who, in turn made friends with people who aren't stupid, go to work in a place where stupid people don't work ect... You say you met stupid people in retail; that is a pretty good indication of the degree of stupid in the general public.

They're all so rude to!

Yep. I'm all ofthem, at the same time.
Being everywhere is a tough job and I can't get to everyone sometimes. I'll be sure to visit you at east once in your lifetime.
Don't worry, plenty of stupid to go around.

Now to go complain about how government pollution is causing light diffraction.
Are you sure you wouldn't rather come with me to warn people of the perils of moon cancer? :D
Only if we make a tv show about how Aliens made the moon and lorded over ancient humans on the way :D

According to the internet, Some are on 4chan, some are in texas, some are on council estates, and others died proving Charles Darwin Right: http://www.darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin2009-03.html

Other than that, go to your local high school, look around, bask in the stupidity.

OP, try getting a job as a store clerk, preferably at a mall. then you'll know our pain.
Otherwise people can be pretty smart if we give them a chance.

Search for any movie that just came out in theaters, on torrent sites. You can find the stupid people there, downloading the "DVD/BD rips" of movies.
You want me to explain how that works?
They're not stupid.
A lot of movie theaters show movies off of discs.
When you find a torrent like that, it means an employee of a theater nabbed himself a disc, copied it, and uploaded it as a torrent.
Simple as that.
Cool, now let me tell you how it really works: 99% of the time none of those are real, and most of them are obviously fake rar and wmvs, with comments telling and pointing out that to people.

Wow. To all those who have trouble finding stupid people, I say "Kudos to you, you lucky bunch!"

I can't go a day without at least a Daily Dose of Stupid. Maybe they're all hanging out where I live?

In all seriousness, I don't there are truly stupid people so much as folks who are just ignorant and unaware. Seems they just sort of get trapped in their own little Bubbles of Reality and forget they share the Earth with seven billion other people.

So I don't think the issue is literally a lack of intelligence...just a lack of awareness.

Try working in retail at a grocery store or something.
You'll find them there... they're all there.

As one random instance, I was asked if we sold napalm. At a grocery store.
I was going on lunch so I just sent him to general merchandise.

People in my college class don't know Europe.

They were asked to point out Portugal. They pointed to Ireland.

Switzerland went to Poland.

I was one of two who knew what a "Lithuania" was.
That's just knowledge, most likely the locations of the European countries isn't something they need to focus on much in their daily lives? Could you find all the African countries on a map?
I don't know about where you live, but World War 2 is something that has been covered extensively in schools where people in my class came from. Like, every year. They just forgot where Germany was. That's a failure of retention of knowledge.

And I can find North African countries >_> Get's a little fuzzy more south. But I know which countries are African.

About your example. It seems he had trouble understanding things he didn't have to interact much with, and once explained, he got it. It's like you and calculus, right?

Actually, he is always behind because, unlike everyone else, he can't talk and work at the same time.
