The main cast of Mobile Suit Gundam seemed to be pretty multicultural. You had

Anglo-Saxon: Amuro, Frau Bow, Kai(?), Sayla, Char, Sleggar
Asian: Bright, Hayato, Mirai
Hispanic: Ryu (I mean his last name is Jose).

The Gundam series have always seemed a bit more on the multinational side in terms of their characters, but it tends to fluctuate.

It's because you must watch bad anime.
I've never divulged myself in mainstream garbage such as (but not limited to) DBZ,Naruto,Bleach or Deathnote.
I've only every really watched serious animes, that the Japanese are proud enough to keep subbed and never dubbed. They have tons of skin color varieties and normal hair colors.
My answer; They do have Japanese people.
My suggestion; Watch real anime.

I noticed that a fair few characters I thought were white were actually supposed meant to be Asian. You know, you'd see a character with pale skin and blonde hair and think he/she is European, only for them to announce that he/she is Chinese or Indonesian or whatever. I don't think they're racist so much as not very good at depicting race, and is that really a bad thing.

Just about every fucking where to answer your question. Here's some proof

No offense to Asians but just look at their eyes, despite the hair and skin colour that looks pretty asian to me. I think they try to make them look a bit more Western to either appeal to our side of the globe or maybe they find us easier to draw or something. Oh just so you know I don't watch anime, the only thing I have close to it are the facts that I once watched steamboy (Good flick) and something something in the valley of wind (Ehhhhh). I just happen to have a friend who freakin' loves it (Asian background by the way) and I watch alot of ytp (Captpan6 is one of my favs so that explains how I knew to look up the Haruhi show)

I say it's because Japanese people want to make their little characters raceless as possible. So they end up being white and generic with crazy hair. But not alwyas of course.

As for no black people, I'll say it has to do with the culture in Japan more than being racists. My guess is that there isn't many black people in Japan, and most black people they know are immigrants or from TV. But theres always Mr. Popo. ^^
I simply see it as... black people cost more to color, are harder to draw properly without looking like a painted white person, and are harder to shade.

From what I've seen, it seems most anime character make up a race of their own. Unnatural hair colors, varying skin tones and ambiguous facial features. It seems influences somewhat from both Western culture and Eastern culture, but isn't on either side. They may live in Japan and have Japanese names, but their design is in a world of its own.

most characters in anime are asian. They may look as pale as a ghost, but they're asian.

You have a point. Either Japanese anime artists are racist, or you are too preoccupied with racial diversity and political correctness.

The only anime black guy I've ever seen is the guy from Interstella 5555.
I love that movie!
It is my considered opinion that the characters are usualy intended to be Japanes and it is just a happy coincedence that they later where able to endear themselves to almost any race.
Technically, he wasn't even human! But that's besides the point.

I watch anime here and there. I guess I missed all the episodes with black guys.
Due to a linguistic error on my part . You seem to have assumed I was only talking only about Interstella 5555. I was talking about anime in general.

When I lived in Singapore, the Asian women were obsessed with round eyes. (This is the truth.)
Some even had surgery to give themselves better eyelids to give their eyes a more rounded appearance.
(That's why people loved me with my big ole eyes =P)

But my guess would be that they portray heroes as they wish they could be in reality. What's more impressive, a sterotypical Japanese businessmen fighting crime or someone like say.. Ichigo from Bleach fighting people?
