Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Joe Satriani

What do all these names have in common, apart from the obvious fact that they're some of the best known guitar gods in the history of rock? Well, they're all guys! This thought occurred to me today: Why are the no female guitar legends?

Do women not have the requisite drive and motivation? Or are their hands to small and delicate to properly shred? What gives? What do the rest of you think?

Same place as the Female motorsports legends and the female Tour de France winners. Some things just don't seem to attract or suit many women, becoming a guitar legend with thousands of (female) groupies seems to be one of them.

There aren't many female guitar legends because there aren't many female guitarists. Don't ask me why, I guess girls just don't want to play the guitar.

The guitarist from Heart. I think her name's Ann. I know her last name is Wilson.
Yes, Ann Wilson of Heart is talented, but she doesn't have the name recognition of the others, as your reply demonstrated...

I also think that Liz Phair is pretty good, but again, few know her...

Well...being a female, I think maybe there's not been any rise in female guitarists...either that or they've not been given a decent chance.

"too delicate to properly shred??" I think we can shred!

...I won't take that as a sexist comment though :p

Sorry, that comment was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek... I know that not all women have small and/or delicate hands...

Where are all of the funny female comedians? Where are the great female guitarists? Do you really want to know?

We hide them all in our super secret female base where we laugh about how superior we are compared to you guys and secretly plan our take over of the world.

It's all true.

Ruyter Suys of Nashville Pussy is the only one that I can think of who should be in a Guitar Hero game.

I knew it!

You're all hiding out, listening to the greatest riffs ever written, and laughing your asses off to the best jokes that no man has ever heard... I knew the women were holding out on us!

I'd have to agree with you on that one. Just seems to me that females might not be as interested as males when it comes to that "gutiar ledgend" mentality. I wouldn't mind seeing a woman in that role though.

No argument here about that, and I'm sure everyone else would agree...

Yeah, they're good, and I just remembered that the Donnas kick ass, too... but they're still not legends if you ask me...

Ann is the singer. Nancy Wilson (her sister) is the guitarist. And she is awesome. Also, someone else already said Liz Phair, and Sheryl Crow is a great guitarist, but people tend to know her as a singer instead.

I think there are fewer women guitarists for the same reason there are fewer women gamers. We all know the answer to that question, right?

Right?
