Yeah, [The Runaways are] good, and I just remembered that the Donnas kick ass, too... but they're still not legends if you ask me...
Lita Ford and Joan Jett are legends.

I was going to say Heart, but Roger Fisher probably wrote the guitar leads for them.

I think there are fewer women guitarists for the same reason there are fewer women gamers. We all know the answer to that question, right?

Right?
Um, 'cuz girls have cooties..?

Where are all of the funny female comedians? Where are the great female guitarists? Do you really want to know?

We hide them all in our super secret female base where we laugh about how superior we are compared to you guys and secretly plan our take over of the world.

It's all true.
Hmmm... Good look with that...

I have never EVER witnessed a female bassist or drummer!

I knew it!

You're all hiding out, listening to the greatest riffs ever written, and laughing your asses off to the best jokes that no man has ever heard... I knew the women were holding out on us!
We also have the tastiest cookies, the most devious strategies for tic--tac-toe, and have learned the ability of flight.

How awesome it is for us, and how sad it is that you will never find this world.

Google and Youtube are your friends. (Mostly).
If I have to Google "female guitar legends" to find them, then they're not very legendary...

So you've never looked at The Smashing Pumpkins or The Pixies, both of which have female bassists? I've also witnessed a 'female drummer'... one of my sisters plays the drums, and the band I used to be in also had a female drummer.

Edit: Sonic Youth also had a female bassist. Ooh, and Hole. Wait, this seems to be a grunge thing...

Though not a legend, Wata of Boris is an incredible guitar player. If they continue to be as prolific as they are she could easily become more notable.

Well, I think that Nancy Wilson, Joan Jett and Liz Phair are as close as we're gonna get, but I'd argue that they're not of the same caliber as Hendrix, Clapton or Vaughn...

those are about the only 2 in the rock realm really

as was said i don't think it's a really female thing to play hardcore rock/metal guitar that usually puts someone in the guitar legend category.

also tho i'm not a fan of country there is Bonnie Raitt, who is a pretty good guitarist as well

We've already got a plan to neutralise your crack comedy corp. A Dane Cook-powered sonic weapon. A similar technique harnessing Christian Rock will wipe your superior shredders from the face of the planet, ensuring male dominance until the Y chromosome vanishes from the genome.

I think the real issue is that most people apply the arbitrary era of the 60s and 70s to the notion of legendary guitarists. Back then, the hedonistic lifestyle of hard rock was really a chauvanistic endeavor in of itself.

There are many great female musicians within other genres (folk, shoegaze, pop, punk, etc) but if you isolate your perspective to the notion of 60's, 70's, and 80's hard rock then you are beginning from a fairly myopic and male slanted time and genre.

Ultimately, rock music is relatively young and so is the notion of female equality so the sample size is just too small.

The Smashing Pumpkins have had a variety of female bassists. For the metalcore kids out there, All That Remains have one too. For the indie kids, Amanda from stellastarr* is very much female, as is Hilary from the now sadly departed JJ72.

...I always thought there was something really sexy about female bassists. And yes, that includes Kim Deal and Kim Gordon back in the day. The former is about the closest thing I'll ever have to a 'musical idol'.

actually no that's not it, it's not arbitrary to be able to play as well as Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn or Eric Clapton. it's not chauvinistic at all, it's technical skill and merit not who has a bigger guitar to strum

i apply the same for those bands that "don't solo to center out someone" it's because they just can't do it

no i don't limit myself like that but the realms of rock and metal have attracted most of the best guitarists over the years because of the skill required to do some of the really great licks and tricks that has been rock over the past 40 years

Seriously, ask any of the big names why they started or kept playing the guitar and they'll always tell you the same thing. To get women. Women generally don't need to get women, thus they don't play.
