What do all these names have in common, apart from the obvious fact that they're some of the best known guitar gods in the history of rock? Well, they're all guys! This thought occurred to me today: Why are the no female guitar legends?

Do women not have the requisite drive and motivation? Or are their hands to small and delicate to properly shred? What gives? What do the rest of you think?
Eric Clapton sucks. All he did was rip off old black men. Now, Steve Howe is a guitar god.

Wrong. Eric Clapton is brilliant.

Anyway, I know plenty of female guitarists personally, and from observation I can say that most of them don't have the same drive as many male guitarists I know. This may not be universal, but from my experience this is what I think may be the cause.

Masayoshi Takanaka can blow the pants off of 20 Eric Claptons. You want to hear a real guitar player, listen to Al Di Meola.

Oh ho the irony. As I hadn't heard of either of them I youtubed Masayoshi Takanaka. Guess what song he was playing? Crossroads. Anyway listening to some other things I'd say he's at best equal to Clapton. And definately not as good a songwrighter. Al Di Meola? Maybe. And Clapton most certainly did not "rip off old black men".

The song Crossroads that you mention is actually a Robert Johnson song.

@ this:

This wasn't really intended to be a "who's the better guitarist" thread. And as much as some of you might protest, Eric Clapton is a guitar legend, like it or not. Just because you might not agree doesn't invalidate the millions of records he's sold or the millions of fans he's attracted.

My original question pertains to more than just talent. Yes, talent is one of the vital ingredients required for guitar god-hood, but mass appeal is also necessary. You can't be a guitar legend if no one knows who you are....

Just thought I'd throw in this video of Heart performing Crazy on You as an example of why Ann Wilson deserves a lot more recognition:

Especially at 2:31.

I would do terrible, terrible things to that woman. She's too damn cool.

And Gabriela from "Rodrigo y Gabriela"
Ding! You win.
Anyways, I'm speaking from my own perspective as a starting guitarist here, but I decided to take up playing while listening to a song from my fav band Iron Maiden....during the climax of their song "Phantom Of The Opera" I was like....."I wish I could play something like that!"

I think this is a good example because you don't see a lot of girls who dig Metal, and thus there aren't a lot of girls who can be inspired by it!
But yeah, I also think there's probably a ton of guys who got into playing for the chicks.....kinda sad really if you need a second instrument to get a girl! :D

I'm not saying girls can't be guitar legends, but I don't think many of them have the proper motivation to do so. Men do it for fun, fame, girls and, in some cases, to establish masculinity. Why do women play? Mostly for fun it seems. Which is fine, I'm not badmouthing, I'm just pointing out what I have observed.

Also, it seems that the realm of actually music is available almost exclusively to men anyways. Composing complex music, whether it's metal or classical, seems to be of interest only to men while women create music like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. Most of those types of artists don't even write their own material either.

Anyone care to try Melissa Auf der Maur, she was the bassist for Hole and Smashing Pumpkins after the first one died and now she's been working on her own solo career.

There is no such thing as talent. There is only you, your guitar and the amount of time and effort you put into playing it.
