Now I know this question has probably been asked over and over since the escapists inception, so that's why I'm putting a spin on things.

Where are you from, AND, do you do anything in particular to try and seek out people of similar interests in your city? Do you brandish geeky merch whenever you go out in public? Do you drop quotes and references in to everyday conversation in hope of stumbling across someone who recognizes them? And how do you react when you see someone referencing something AWESOME?

I ask this because I try to make myself a walking reference at any given point in hope of finding like-minded people. A while back on here I remember seeing a fellow citizen of Dunedin, New Zealand, and that's where I'm from. Since then I've seen some pretty awesome portal 2 stuff floating about (which is reasonably expensive to get here). I made a note of complimenting a girl in a turret hoodie the other day to no avail, but in the past I have managed to make friends just by wearing something that expresses my interests.

Where are you from? Do you rep your geeky nature outwardly for the world to see? Have you ever made friends this way?

I'm from Woerden, a small rural town in The Netherlands. Do I hope to find like minded people there? Hell no. :D

However, I attend a university of technology (hint: full of fellow geeks), and I sometimes wear clothes that reflect my interests. I once got into a long conversation with someone because I was wearing a Daft Punk t-shirt and he'd been to the same concert. Or sometimes during breaks I play some games and I get people coming round to see what I'm playing or people who enjoy the same games. I quite like that. I don't really advertise my interests to get to know new people, but I do enjoy it when you can have a conversation with random strangers about a shared interest. And sometimes, yes, I do make friends that way.

Right now I am a resident of Amsterdam, Holland.

I don't do anything particular to 'seek out' people who share my interests, as my interests are mostly limited to literature sci-fi related stuff. I frankly don't care for socializing when I'm sober, as my spare time is devoted to reading and gaming, and when I'm drunk I got to clubs.
Honestly, why would I bother with 'seeking people out'? You are all here, on this website. How much would it improve if it were IRL?

But sure, if you wanna go drinking in Amsterdam, hook me up.

I'm from Ireland.

I don't do anything to seek out geeky people.
Most of my friends have pretty varied interests and hobbies.
I mean, obviously there's overlap because otherwise we'd have nothing to talk about but I don't seek out friends based on what shirt they're wearing.

I live in a small town in Holland called Bleiswijk where roughly 70% of the inhabitants are senior citizens.

I don't sport my geekiness at all, apart from being socially stunted. I don't wear geek referencing clothes, I don't make geek references or quotes, I don't even have one single poster or geek paraphernalia in my house apart from games and DVDs.

So I am a very low key geek. And thank God for that, because I just turned 31, and no offense to anyone, but to go around wearing anime/game related clothing at that age is kinda pathetic.

A Hermit's Cave
Man, the Dutch are over-represented in this thread! =P

Anyway, I'm from... actually, I won't say what was on my mind at first.

I'm from London... and I dress relatively neutrally. *shrug* Monochrome shirt/jeans/t-shirt is what you'll find me wearing most of the time (maybe a fleece if it's getting chilly), and I don't do much by way of finding people who share my interests, got a few friends from uni who do anyway, so I see little need to expand further. *shrugs again*

However, I do randomly blurt out quotes whenever my mind feels like it, depending on my train of thought, irrespective of where, and many high-fivez are exchanged if someone else gets the reference. *saunters away*

Australia. The coldest part, which often gets left off the emblems.

I don't really seek out geeky people. I mean, if I meet one such creature and we have something to talk about then... yay, but I've never really made it a point to look for them.

Oh, and no, I don't display my geekiness. In fact I keep pretty quiet about it. Hell, I don't even like wearing stuff with visible logos on it. Me willingly wearing a gaming related t-shirt should be taken as a sign that I'm ready to be euthanised.

Really?

So you mean... with... with the accent and everything?

*ahem*

Y'know, for some reason I'd always just automatically assumed you were French. Probably because of the avatar. (Please tell I'm not the only person who pictures people as their avatars in the same way you picture real life acquaintances as their faces.) Althooouuugh... now that I look at it closely, I'm not even sure if that's who I thought it was.

No one from the states yet so I will give it a go. I was born in Chicago Illinois but I moved to the Southern part of the US at a couple days old. I have lived in 8 different states and in Germany for three years. I can find plenty of people who were born in Chicago but I don't really identify with them. I haven't found a lot of people from any of the areas I lived as they were mostly rural.

As far as geekiness, I tend to have my own sense of style and dress. I wear comic, funny or cartoon shirts as well as PC game shirts whenever I feel like it. Helps break up the monotony of wearing metal band shirts lol. I can fit in quotes or sayings if I wish but usually I don't unless I know someone will understand the reference. I usually get positive feedback when ever I wear something geeky in public. And yes I have met a few friends from what I wear or say. Most of my geek friends are from going to gaming nights at the local shops, shared interests and all that.

Yeah, unfortunately, it's not the worst one ever though!

My avatar is Amelie so, unless you meant a different French lady, you were right.
I don't think I've ever noticed a French person on this site.
I wish I had a French accent though, that would be awesome.

Yeah, people are kind of their avatars in my head too.

Yeah, this gets asked a lot, usually with a poll with options like "North America" "Canada" "Europe" "Britain" "England" "Somewhere else". Always though if a poll is included, it should be by continent, only then the poll probably wouldn't work anyway.

You are from the Australian Antarctic Territory?

...

Anyhoo, I'm from Australia, New South Wales, which is sorta like normal Wales only with twice the population and 40 times the area.

Now that I think of it, though, the two actually do share a few things in common, being constituent parts of an English speaking nation with it's own government and laws under a higher level, which is somewhat unusual throughout the world.

I live in England, Nottingham to be more specific.

I don't really seek out people who share my interests, that's what the internet is for.

As for my geeky nature? No, I don't really put that on display, maybe a subtle t-shirt or two, but I only bring it up in conversations if that's where it was heading.

I'm from, and live in, Dundee, Scotland.

As for the whole geek thing, I have a variety of geek memorabilia and t-shirts, but I wouldn't say I particularly show them off. If people ask what it's about, sure I'll tell them, but besides that, not really.

Well I'm a metalhead, so I'm always wearing band merch of some form or another. I met pretty much all of my friends from going to rock/metal club nights and gigs etc.

I'm also heavily tattooed and many a time I've ended up chatting to complete strangers for quite some time about tats (both theirs and mine). It's a good conversation starter.

And I'm from northern England, Preston.

Bergen, Norway. A small city stuck between the mountains and fjords of Northern Europe. We have plenty of rain, on of the largest open illegal drugmarkets in all of Europe, and more kebab joints than there are people (if you ever visit, the best one is 'Bergen Kebab' near the theatre). Oh, and it's a university city and there is also culture and stuff...

Well uh... I have a nyancat sweather? Does that count? Most of my hooded clothing is animal themed with ears on them, but beyond that I don't really wear anything geeky. My clothing preference doesn't really have much to do with videogames, and I also don't speak in a particularily videogamey manner. I avoid internet slang too, I don't even generally write things like "omg" and "lol" in forums or chats. I'm also not very good at making new friends, I'm pretty shy. I always enjoy making new friends, but I generally don't... It may just be I'm not terribly interesting =p. I have a handfull of really good friends that I enjoy talking to though, so I don't mind so much.

Springfield, Ohio here. It's a small town with nothing to do.

I don't really look for people with the same interest as me, though I did consider joining my college's anime club but couldn't find the time. There is a group at my college that plays magic, video games, etc. daily at my school. But I avoid them because they are loud, cuss like 5th graders, and half don't even go to the school.

My geeky nature is only shown by my Mjlonir necklace and when I get it, my Fairy Tail necklace. I also never bring up stuff in conversations unless it is relevant or they bring it up first.

That would make for an amusing picture to just imagine people here as their avatars sitting around drinking beers and playing cards XD

It's like the opening to a joke. So a Clown, an Orc, a Taco, a Grumpy French lady, and a cat were all playing cards... XD

OT: Where am I from or where do I live now? XD

Because those are two different answers for me :p

I live in West Michigan right now, around Grand Rapids.

As for what I do to meet people? I go to bars, talk to people in class, and go to "clubs" oriented towards my hobby (right now just martial arts).

I don't try to stand out by wearing things and hoping people talk to me about them. Nor do I really reference things often.

I'm from Exeter, England, but right now I'm living in Cardiff, Wales for uni. It's not hard to find geeks here, the place being a hotbed of Whovian/ Sherlockian activity - especially around the uni itself, where we've had a few glimpses of Benedict Cumberbatch filming for Sherlock. I wear a lot of geeky t-shirts, but I tend to wear shirts or jumpers over them depending on the weather, so they're only really on show if I want to make my nerditude obvious.
