Basically I love the games from the early 2000s and late 90s but most places don't have them. Where can I buy or download them legally? Also if you're gonna tell me a website please tell me how reliable it is, I've seen too many people get ripped off by unreliable sites.

Well you can always try gog (www.gog.com). Lots of games from that era, they're DRM free, and they often come with other goodies, like a manual and a soundtrack. It is my (and many others) favorite digital distribution platform.

From my understanding, it's legal to pirate old games when the company stops making them for a certain amount of time.

I also heard of this site in a Jimquisition episode so I signed up. The only problem I saw is that they have 416 games where as steam has over 700 just in the action genre. The game catalogue isn't exactly impressive though there are a few I just have to get like Masters of Orion 2 (had a disk but when I tried to play it in high school the disk cracked).

This is something I've often wondered, what exactly are the laws on that?

The main reason I suggest it (other than it being an awesome service) is that it does have some games that you can't find on steam, such as the Baldur's Gate games.

It's a legal, and moral, grey area. On the one hand, most of the games are still copyrighted, with all the legal restrictions that come with copyrighted material. So it is technically illegal, but there are very few companies that are actively trying to stop the pirating of old games.

On the moral front, if the game is not being sold, then there is probably someone who, for some reason, does not want the game to be sold. However, if they're not selling the game, its not like they can lose a sale from you pirating it.

Ultimately, pirating old games is a practice I neither condemn nor condone, and you will have to make your own decision as to whether or not you are okay with doing it.

Oh holy GOG, which descended unto us, bringing gifts of long forgotten ancient wonders of ye olde videogames...

So yeah, go to them, they're great, simple to use, of course most of the games are easily playable by even rubbish computers due to their age, and best of all, they do awesome sales and even occasionally make some games free for a short time.

As for pirating old games, I think the general rule is that it's technically legal if you once owned (and somehow have proof of owning) that particular game, but I'm not too sure, so don't blame me if the FBI ram down your door.

On the grey side of the spectrum is Home of the Underdogs [http://homeoftheunderdogs.net/], an old games database with download links (both legal (if available) and abandonware links).

Legality also depends on where you live, for instance here in the Netherlands downloading is "always" legal, assuming that what you are trying to download isn't itself illegal (ie kiddie porn etc.), uploading isn't though.

Try abandonia as a good alternative to HOTU http://www.abandonia.com/

They were pretty strict about only legal dls when I was last there and they update frequently. There's even a Steam group for them I think.
