...Yeah.
I was going to post this, and then it sounded like a good idea. Doom went there, and look what it did for that franchise.

Honestly, they are probably going to have to go back to their roots, like NSMB. My guess is we will see something churned out to be VERY close to SMB3. Maybe SMB3 meets Mario 64.

Mario games are still good but really, Nintendo neeeds to try something else. Anything else. Well, maybe not a JRPG, but nearly anything else.
There have already been several Mario JRPGs...
I know about the first one (the one for the SNES they refused to export to Europe), are the rest the paper Mario series?
Yes, and then there is the one on the GBA (Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga) and its sequel on the DS (Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time). And you know that they've released Super Mario RPG in Europe now through WiiWare?
No, I didn't know that. However, I'd need a Wii to do that, and in reality most people from that time would have downloaded the ROM hack and SNES emulator to get around the bizzare export rules of some Japanese companies.

Anywho, I think Nintendo will make Mario games ...well, forever. Each time updating them for the next generation of youth gamers and their parents (from what I've heared/seen on Yahtzee, Galaxy is good for both kids and adults, and I know I played the early Marios with my parents). To be honest, its a good stable strategy, and I see it repeated with the Zelda/Link games, and Mertoid, etc. However, I do wish Nintendo would branch out alittle away from these recycled products.

It pretty easy to see what they'll do next. One day Mario goes for a walk in the castle when he notices a pipe he's never seen before, he decides to go down it to see where it leads. At the exact same time, in a parallel universe, Link is going for a walk in Hyrule field and goes for a quick swim in Lake Hylia. All of a sudden, a powerful whirl pool forms under Link and he is sucked into an ancient pipe hidden under water. Through some strange kind of inter-dimensional fuck-up-ery they both find themselves to be in the others reality.

Meanwhile, by some random chance both Ganondorf and Bowser decide that it's about that time to cause mischief by kidnapping Peach/Zelda again. For some dumb reason the only way for Mario and Link to go home is to save each others princesses.

This actually sounds pretty good. Hang on, I need to go copyright this before anyone at Nintendo finds out. Please, under no circumstances tell Shigeru Miyamoto until after I get back.

Mario Galaxy was terrific fun. I would happily buy another similar game if it were to come out, my only gripe with it was the unlocking Luigi should have turned the game into a super-hard mode, not just a re-hash of the same stars with some minor, sporadic differences.

I feel for the next Mario game they should take the series back to it's roots. Still a 3D platforming game of course, but reuse all of the old enemies and locations, bring back the clouds with two eyes and the strange mounds and similar elements like that, make it feel like an original Mario Bros game or Super Mario World. I think that would be fantastic for the series, as well as providing a great sense of nostalgia for older gamers.

YAY for references.
But in all seriousness, i believe that a mario and zelda game would be totally sweet, but i reckon they should add an easter egg into one of their games refering to missingo from the old pokemon games... god damn it that screwed up my pokemon blue.

Son of Mario

Set in the post apocalyptic Mushroom Kingdom. Mushroom Kingdom weapons inspectors forgot to check under Bowsers castle. The bombs drop after high stress hostage negotiations for their beloved monarch take a turn for the worse.

300 years later people are just trying to survive. Horrible mutant abominations forged from gumba/koopa genetic splicing roam rampant slaughtering and eating whomever they find. For his part in the destruction of the civilized world uttering the name Mario is meet with sudden and furious reprisal.

The genetic clone/cybornetic offspring of the Mushroom Kingdoms once fabled hero emerges from his test tube womb buried deep within the crumbling forgotten ruins of a distant castle. He sets off to discover the fate of his makers and the reasons for his creation...and to stomp on some heads.

Rated M of course

Time travel. It's been done before really badly, Nintendo has a chance with the technology of the Wii, (or the DS, or a new console. who knows?) to create a game that requires you to travel back in time to recover something else besides stars.

And it consistently flips between 3D, 2D, or 2.5D depending on time period. And hey, add some DS+Wii connectivity (as in... the DS is the time travelling unit Mario uses) and you have a great game!

Um...Decline of Video Gaming?

Can my +10 be cupcakes...you didn't specify so I guess I pick.

:D

EDIT: Hmm...has Mario been a Necromancer yet? Try that next and let's see how it works out...drybone army, hmm...

I also second Bowser getting his own game, I'm surprised he hasn't already.
