Where could a Godzilla sequel go?

I'm assuming that most of you will have seen Godzilla by now. For those who haven't, I'll spoiler the rest of this post for your benefit.
If Toho allows Legendary to continue making Godzilla films, I think that the best thing they could do is follow Serizawa as he and Monarch track Godzilla's movements. Future films could be similar to the Godzilla animated series, where HEAT followed Godzilla Jr. as he hunted other Kaiju across the globe.

This would solve two big issues with this film. The first is that Serizawa is a much more interesting character than All American Hero Ford Brody. He has a motivation for following a nuclear dinosaur, and a strong moral compass. The second is that it would move the action away from the United States, allowing the films to go to exotic locales over the globe as Godzilla hunts his next big target. Such a simple setup, with a good chance for a satisfying payoff.

I'm all for spoiler warning but I think that people lost the right to complain that spoilers exist when they enter a thread about a movie's hypothetical sequel...(also, I don't think you actually spoil anything in that spoiler...)

Anyway, I dig your idea. While I didn't hate Godzilla's All American Hero Action Figure like many others seemed to have, I think that Serizawa would have everything you need (namely a drive for Godzilla) to explain why he keeps following him around. Lieutenant 'Merica seemed to have been shoved in to following Godzilla with the flimsiest of reasons where Serizawa would make complete sense for why he keeps showing up wherever Godzilla is.

If for some reason that won't work (and I should come up with my own idea instead of stealing yours), I think that a good sequel idea would be for the world's military to turn on Big G because they're (somewhat justifiably) so afraid of him. This could also allow you to introduce Mechagodzilla as a new foe (say the military made him to kill Godzilla).

Alternatively, Mechagodzilla could be a construct made by the US in the event of other MUTO attacks. I heard tell of an easter egg involving another well known monster which could be revealed in the sequel and knowing such a thing exists would likely drive the US military to build something on the same scale as Godzilla, especially if the real thing were to go into hiding or, be busy on the other side of the planet with other kaiju.

Godzilla fights...

... Mothra. When the Brodies revisit their qurantined home you can briefly see a terrarium with a broken chrysalis inside and an inscription that says "Mothra", indicating Ford used to have a pet caterpillar (called Mothra) which transformed into the giant ass moth from the 60s over 15 years of exposed radiation. Not saying I particularly want the series to go this way but they left that window open just in case.

According to Wikipedia, the director said he'd like to base a sequel on the "monster island" concept used in the Godzilla fighting games. Which... sounds kind of awesome and is a good excuse to add the other canon monsters to the series.

And you KNOW Henry Winkler would do it too... ;)

This would be the silliest, and most awesome idea ever implemented ;)

If The Fonz is piloting Mechagodzilla on top of that, I would be sold TWICE fold!

OT: Well, besides the obvious "Monster Island with Mr. Serizawa" as well as Mothra... I say bring on King Ghidorah! That movie can even build it's [other] human plotline around alien conspiracies and shit as well as a all-out brawl between Godzilla and King Ghidora off some coast of China or something like that... (because "whatever", that's why...)

I think both of those together would be the best possible direction for a sequel. Here's why:

Humanity hails Godzilla as a savior by the end of the movie, but given a few years and more monsters appearing, that title becomes weaker. Yes Godzilla sorts the problem out but the damage his battles cause are exceedingly costly. One year after a particularly nasty fight the people worldwide demand a less costly solution. Enter: Mecha-Godzilla. The form is justified because while the monster battles cost a metric fuckton, Godzilla is still massively popular, so it was only natural to build the machine in his shape. Serizawa however is worried that Mecha-Godzilla will only make things worse. For a while it seems like his fears are unfounded as Mecha-Godzilla proves to be incredibly popular, perhaps even more so than the real thing. Then, disaster. When facing a new M.U.T.O. in Utah Mecha-Godzilla suffers a devastating loss. The monster then makes a beeline for the nearest city: Salt Lake. Serizawa realizes that the capabilities that this one displayed are not of this earth, this monster, is extraterrestrial. Gravity beams, magnetic field manipulation, yes, the three headed space dragon King Ghidorah has awoken from his dormancy, and is ready to continue the millions of years long stalemate with Godzilla. The problems don't stop there, however. Serizawa notices that Ghidorah seems to not have any real reason for the destruction he causes. Yes, Ghidorah is only doing it because he gets a kick out of it. The race is now on to not only make sure that Godzilla fights Ghidorah, but to get Mecha-Godzilla back into a condition that he can assist Godzilla to end the stalemate.

I'm not gonna spoiler post it, cause quite frankly my dear, I don't give a monkeys, but I'd LOVE to finally see a Godzilla vs Rodan, yes Rodan's been in Ghidorah, Invasion of the Astro Monster, Destroy All Monster and Godzilla Final Wars, but we've never seen an actual Godzilla vs Rodan movie, he gets tacked in like an after-thought which makes me sad in my heart, I've always had a soft spot for Rodan and I personally feel it's high time the King of the Air got some love.

I think the sequel should have some flashback scenes mainly to explain why Godzilla is a force of good well what Ishiro been telling us (ok he just say he is the balancer and the predator to the Muto). Heck they could even throw in monster island.

I just got back from watching the movie a few minutes ago actually

@Soviet_Heavy
Honestly, this was the premise that I wanted and was hoping the movie would have while I was walking into it. If this isn't the case for the sequel, I'm going to be even more disappointed.

Also regarding Mothra. Damn right they should put her in the next movie if they make one. They inserted that cool foreshadowy easter egg in the movie, they have to do it now. As Spoony said, it's chekov's fucking gun. You don't put it in a scene if you don't intend for it to be fired. Of course, with how many delayed payoffs the movie had, I'm kinda cautiously pessimistic about it.

Wherever the sequel goes, I'm hoping the next one doesn't try to pull a superhero movie sequel by having as many of the iconic monsters in it just to "up the stakes". If they stagger em, we'll have a chance to enjoy more quality time with the monsters and the movies can put out more sequels without running out of ideas. Also, I hope they try making some new monsters instead of just trying to rehash the old ones completely. A bit of a balance.

Hoping they will lease Ghidrah from Toho and make an awesome Godzilla movie. Although they may have to start getting more B movie to account for these monsters.
