Consoles just don't have the power to render most modern games 4 times simultaneously (with some, more demanding games they barely have the power to render it once).
Also gamers wouldn't be accept the drastic sacrifices needed to enable modern games to have 4 player split screen, they'd complain about how each screen was reduced to near PS2 era graphics.
However, I'd like to see the modern, more powerful HDTV's facilitate 2 or 4 player PIP (Picture-in-Picture) split screen by allowing 2-4 consoles to be connected at once, since most have enough inputs and PIP technology.
My 32" Samsung allows PIP (although it's not an even split) but I haven't got 2 consoles to see whether they can be system linked and connected to the TV simultaneously, but it could work in theory.
Multiplayer split screen can be revived, but the extra processing will have to be done by the TV's and not the consoles.
