Where did all the older Escapist users go?

I'm not sure it's a bad thing that some the older users have gone. I think familiarity breeds contempt, and certainly some users can become a bit TOO comfortable with being here.

That being said, some of the older posters were known for being lots of fun to watch, even if they could be abrasive or non-conformist, and with them moving on, the forums are a different place.

You shouldn't joke about that stuff.
Jokes aside, why did they all go and get themselves banned? God damnit...
I think the majority didn't mean too, actually.
Or if they did, they probably did it so they wouldn't have the temptation to log back in. I dunno, you'd have to hunt them down and ask them yourself. I'm just rambling now. :p

Bans, disagreements, harassment- plenty of reasons for people to leave. I, myself, love the community, so I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

EDIT: It was a lot livelier though, back when all those big names would pop in, with their limitless wisdom and considerable presence.

I came here for ZP, signed up out of boredom, and got sucked into the forums.
While I have not posted anywhere near my first year's rate, I'm still around. Just not lately.
A mix of games and not having anything really worth saying in threads has kept me from posting for a while.

But a lot of older users either left of their own volition or got banned.
I haven't seen Ultrajoe, Labby, or a bunch of old guard in a long time.
But I'm sure they're both around.
Somewhere.
I refuse to let my guard down.

I read somewhere that the site traffic tripled once Yahtzee was brought on the team, which would account for the massive increase in forum goers. I'm one of the people who came as a result of Yahtzee.

Lurked on the forums a bunch, then joined as I quite like them.

I've been here for quite a while but I post a lot less than I used to. Mainly because I don't have the time for too many forums at once and I've been really active on a My Little Pony forum instead.

check the user reviews section. generally, they are there. it's the last place in the forums that isn't completely overrun with low-content or trolling posts.

I was a Yahtzee lurker for quite a while before joining. More recently I kind of grew out of Zero punctuation, and the other videos I liked on this website either stopped (like the Daily Drop) or left (I still watch Extra Credits from time to time). The only thing that keeps me here now are the News Feeds so I can stay up to date on my geekisms, and the rare Movie Bob or UnSkippable.

As much as I love the forum, seeing the same topics over and over again can wear one out. And even the News Feeds have somewhat dropped in value lately.

I could list all the same reasons that others have already listed, but they already said them. Personally, I think people just tend to get busier as time goes on, and they have less time for things like this.

I've been here for a few years now (I joined in 2008, but I didn't get really active in the forums until last year). Originally I came for ZP, as so many do, but I stayed to be a part of a (for the most part) respectful, mature community that discusses matters that interest me.

That sounds about average. Forums have varying member turnover and average lifespan... it seems depressing, but that's the way it is. People have life phases, varying interests, and may cease to be interested in a forum for some reason or another.

I came here after I got unexpectedly permabanned from another forum. -halo of innocence- 3 green health bars after 1 month doesn't look too promising... I've left other forums more peacefully. I wonder if I hang around only as long as I can delude people that I have a personality, hahaha.

People get banned, this site has some strict rules compared to others.
Perhaps they just created new accounts.

Eventually you
get tired of the topics/people, get edgy and seek ban

or

just leave/stop comin

The new forum health bar has to be the nail in the coffin with it. Before, you could see an older user get probation around half a dozen times, but now half a dozen offenses = suspension or banning.

Or when they introduced IP bans, rather than account bans... or, at least I don't remember us always having IP bans.

Some left altogether, some only stay in the user groups, some went to other forums. I remember Furburt made his own forums, and I'm sure several of the older users went there.
Furburt made his own? Please redirect me there, good sir. That is where I wish to lurk.

I'd been watching stuff on this website for well over a year before I actually started an account, I finaly caved over a thread I just HAD to weigh in on (which I ended up not going too 'cause I was too busy personalizing my prof. and forgot)

I'm only looking on the front page and I see a few older users. Furburt, Hubilub, Pararaptor, LordCuthberton.

But I recall on one of his posts a few months after this that he hated the monster he started with it. I don't know.
