i personally don't think it's dangerous if you can chat up the driver and get an "a-ok" feeling.
i've sucessfully hitch-hiked twice and it was fun, i actually made new friends both times... i don't maybe i was just one of the lucky ones, so what do you all think?

The odds of me getting picked up/picking up a crazy rapist murderer person are FAR too high for me to want to hitch-hike with anyone.

As a police officer who's seen a lot of things involving hitchhikers. Especially out in the country parts of my county it's more dangerous for the person driving the car.
For the hitchhiker i have two words for you that sum up what i've seen happen to a couple people who hitch hiked:

anal stitches.

That is all.

Yeah; I don't pick people up, or hitch-hike myself. I mean, I don't see any problems with it - go ahead, do it. But I don't trust strangers quite that much; although I almost picked up a hitch hiker the other day. I feel a bit safer about the idea of picking up someone who's PROBABLY a college student like myself - he's probably too busy to moonlight as a serial killer.

I personally don't think it's worth the risk. I've never hitched or picked up someone who was hitching.

I feel a bit uneasy about it TBH. I don't think I'd pick up a hitch-hiker, but I guess I'd hitch-hike myself, if it was absolutely necessary and I had a towel.

I've done it once, helped a group of kids get on their way. To this day I don't know what I was thinking except I was probably thinking I needed the karma about then. I got lucky and they turned out alright, but I won't be doing that again. I know there are good people out there who are down on their luck, but I can't take the chance. My luck isn't that good.

Sociopaths can be extremely charming people.
Right up to the point where you find yourself wrapped in plastic.
Sounds like you've been watching too much dexter and not enough real world serial killers.

i've hitchhiked a couple times, but only while drunk and for distances shorter than 30 km. There's a lot of hitchikers that have hitchiked around europe sucessfully without beeing raped. I probably wouldn't hitchike if i were in usa tho, even though the dad of a friend of my hitchiked there (although then he got picked up by a lady that asked him if he could drive, and later the cops caught up and it turned out she had robbed a jewelry store, he didn't get in trouble for it.)

Never because:

A) If I hitch-hiked, I have no idea if this person is going to drive me to where I'm going, or if I'll end up in his basement, hung up by my feet via meat hooks
B) If I picked up a hitch-hiker, I have no idea if the person has a gun and thinks that my car > my life.

I hate it. It doesn't work. I put my arm out and stick my thumb up and a trucker doesn't come by and pick me to drive me to where I wanna go, which just so happens to also be where he wants to go.

Why hitch when I can drive and have a job? My time and comfort is worth far to me than the price of petrol.

I've picked up a few hitch hikers in my time. Luckily they turned out alright even if one lass was a bit too in love with her cats.

Drove her from Preston to Birmingham and in that time I got the full life story of all 4 of her cats.

Though she did have a genuine reason for hitch hiking.

She was from Birmingham and been to Preston to see her mum but had a falling out with her boyfriend. He'd left her stranded with no money or way to get home. I wouldn't have believed it myself but was in the police station as she was telling the fella at the front desk.

No I wasn't in trouble, was at the station to be interviewed about a mugging i'd witnessed .... and to be laughed at by the copper. As people here may be aware i'm ex army and consider myself physically fit. Well the CCTV showed the women getting mugged and me chasing the mugger but failing terribly to catch the bugger ..... turns out the mugger was a 15 year old lad. He found much amusement in that, the funny side I did not see. Outrun by a bloody kid, i'm getting old.

And now i'm waffling bollocks again, been doing this a lot recently. Sorry folks.

Back on track.

Yeah i've picked up hitch hikers but they have turned out okay. Never done it myself though.

I've heard some horror stories and some funny ones but i've been lucky (apart from mad cat lass).

Never have, and probably never will unless it's a friend or relative. I'd rather not take any chances allowing total strangers into my car.

It's also potentially dangerous for the hitchhiker, since they don't know who's going to stop and pick them up.
