I have hitch hiked unintentionally. There was an old woman and her daughter looking for the place where I happened to be going. They offered me a ride in exchange for showing them where to go and honestly it was cold and the bus was taking forever !

Yeah no.

I don't trust the people where I live let alone people from outside my state. So no hitch-hiking for me, or picking up any hitch-hikers, but I will give them money to use the public bus!

I've never picked up anyone yet. There was one time where I was tempted to pick up a couple of students as their likely destination would have been on my route, but they were walking on a stretch of road where it would have been unsafe, maybe illegal, to stop, so I left them at it.

Dangerous my friends. Been a few homicides in my area about hitchhiking. It just isn't like it was 30 years ago, or so my Dad says.

I've yet to let a hitchhiker in.

I have both hitch-hiked and picked up hitch-hikers.

Picked up hitch-hikers in California several times. Generally European hikers around the national parks near which I currently live and once a couple of Marines who were trying to get back to Camp Pendleton before their leave expired.

Also picked up a couple of hitchhikers in Ireland - an elderly guy going to visit family and a college kid headed back to college after a winter break spent working at a slaughterhouse to pay for tuition.

I have hitch-hiked a few times around the aforementioned national parks. Generally get picked up by either European tourists or rock-climbers. The only time I ever felt at all odd was once I was picked up by a parole officer who wanted to lecture me on how dangerous it was to hitch-hike. It was a little odd and I got out and stayed out when we stopped for gas.

I should probably mention that I'm 6' tall and at the time most of this happened, I was going to the gym for weight training pretty regularly, was in pretty good shape, and otherwise generally at least a little intimidating.

The Marines could have probably taken me out without breaking a sweat though. ;p

I regularly take long drives and pick up hitchers whenever I see them. I've never been robbed or murdered, and usually it's good conversation. The only people I don't like at the ones who don't talk.

Some notable times:
- the guy who traveled with his cat
- the girl who got in and immediately got topless, and spent the trip laying back trying to stay in the sunlight.
- the woman who believed I was kidnapping her
- the guy who brought me $80 of gas, as well as lunch and a hat
- the Japanese backpackers who wouldn't stop taking my picture
- the brony (seriously)

Where I stand on hitch-hiking is usually on the side of the road with my thumb pointed outwards.

I make far to much money to hitch hike. Also there was a girl I believe last year in Colorado who was hitching and was found dead 2 weeks later. People are nuts.

Epic Win ^^

OT: As long as you're not the surprise-serial-killer type of hitch-hiker, you're cool with me.

Best response. /thread

To pick-up a hitchhiker you have to be pretty friendly,
to be a successful hitchhiker you have to be pretty friendly.
I see no problem with friendly people helping friendly people.
I've never participated in hitchhiking though...it's kinda scary.

I think it would all depend on the circumstance, but not likely, I'm too paranoid about that sort of thing.

One of my cousins used to pick up hitchhikers on a regular basis. He would always buy them a meal at McDonalds or something like that and drop them as close to where they were going as he could. One time he picked up a guy, bought him dinner and all that jazz, and when he dropped the guy off at is destination, the guy informed him that he had a gun and was going to rob my cousin, but couldn't bring himself to do it because of how nice he was to the guy.

I always keep myself armed, so occasionally ill help someone out, but usually only if they're going near by. Im not sure id want to drive with someone for hours but, i wouldnt mind a drive across town for someone.

I don't stand. I sit. In my car, while ignoring hitch-hikers for all sorts of time, convenience, olfactory and not-wanting-to-get-murdered reasons.

If a guy actually seemed to need it (and not the homeless guys because that's just awkward) or if he asked me then sure, I've done a few at college but those weren't real hitchhikers.

I'd probably, if I found the guy cool, stop at a cigar bar or something and chat it up for a few (less he had to be somewhere quick).

The problem though, is that I can't navigate by roads, and for some, driving with a person who glares at a GPS every 15 minutes is a little weird.
