Where do you get your anime?

So I've been trying to get more into anime (what other form of entertainment can get away with a story about a Mission to Mars to fight gigantic humanoid cockroaches, of which I am on Episode 5?) but I've run into a bit of a snag...

I am having a dilly of a time finding places to actually be able to watch it.

Now I'm sure some of that is that a lot of it isn't ported over to 'Merica until months after it originally showed up but I'm pretty fine with waiting (in fact, that's my preferred setup as I'd rather be able to watch it on my time ala Netflix rather than once a week or however often Anime comes out).

So, my Anime People of The Escapist, a few questions...

1. How do you get your Anime (please keep in mind the Escapists rules here...hint hint wink wink don't say pirate and ideally don't even hint it's piracy as I really don't want to have to Mod my own damn thread nudge nudge)? I already have Netflix and Amazon but frankly, it seems like a lot of the anime on those services is kind of junk with a handful of gems...

2. Know of any good (ideally free with ads rather than subscription but subscription would be acceptable if they have English dubs) streaming sites for Anime? I've been using Crunchy Roll to watch said Giant Cockroach show but I'd be a lot happier if I could be watching this in English and after Googling around, it seems the vast majority of CR is sub.

3. Anything specific I should check out?

For reference for #3, I am greatly enjoying Terra Formars (giant cockroach show) and have greatly enjoyed shows like Attack on Titan, Robotech, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Soul Eater, Highschool of the Dead (although less fanservicy if possible...), and basically the more actiony animes. I also have "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress" on deck as I just got Amazon Prime. Basically the kind of stuff that wouldn't be terribly practical for them to make in real life as Anime doesn't really have any of those limitations...

There's a website that is related to cartoons. And kisses. And the two words together.

I've only heard about it, and no reasoning person would consider this a suggestion of whatever website it may be. I'm not sure if this website, which I haven't named and in no way suggest, has anime. But to any disreputable soul who might be low enough to visit this site...

I can't really say for obvious reason.

Other than that, have you try Crunchyroll? I'm not fond of that website as many years ago, going to that website gave my pc a virus for some strange reason despite being a legit place to watch anime.

I've been using Crunchyroll but everything they've got is subbed where I'd prefer dubbed. Also, their commercial spots are very weirdly placed (or maybe it's just this show but the commercials pop in mid-sentence every freaking time it feels like).

It certainly works, I'm just kind of hoping that something better exists.

Funimation. I'm suprised no one has mentioned it yet. They're the dub people. And there is a dual-crunchy-funimation service coming in the future.

As for what anime you should watch, you could try Black Lagoon, Jormungand, Samurai Champloo, FMA Brotherhood, Speed Grapher, Mushi-shi, and Baccano. Those all have decent dubs.

I don't know if it's a past thing or not but isn't Funimation kind of infamous for butchering the hell out their dubs by removing basically anything that might possibly maybe almost be maybe possibly offensive to someone at some point somewhere?

Only a certain percentage of shows get a dub in the first place, and dubs usually don't happen until BR release so for any really recent shows subs will be your only choice no matter the source unless you want to wait six months to a year after it's screened. Wow that was an awkward sentence. I understand your preference for dubs, but you'll need to get used to subs at least part of the time.
Crunchyroll's ads are annoying, especially since they're not placed by hand but are automatically inserted at points that are a particular percentage of the way through the show. If you decide you like the site then their monthly subscription is pretty cheap and both gets rid of the ads and lets you stream in HD. As for anything that you can't find on Crunchyroll, all I can say is "what sound does a Japanese cat make?"

That's a very fair point.

Maybe I'm not giving Crunchy the chance it deserves...

I can recommend Animelab. Free to watch anime, the only crap you really have to put up with is the occasional 20 second ad at the start of the occasional episode. (but I find that's only for new episodes of show, the anime that has been there longer typically has no ads)

Its a lot easier than Crunchyroll for me personally, and there's a good variety of anime.

I get mine from Japan. After all, that's where it's made. Haha!
Ah, jokes
No, I get mine from a rather paradoxically-named website which advertises itself on the (not) terrible quality of their subtitles.

Terra Formars was enjoyable. It does feel a liiitle bit slow-paced at times, mind you.

But what would I suggest?
Definitely Youjo Senki, or 'The Saga of Tanya the Evil'. First season ended a few days ago.
If you have NOT seen Madoka Magica, rectify this mistake of your life. I believe the series was condensed/retold in the first two movies, and the third film is entirely new.
Angel Beats, if you have emotions and want to hurt.
Ergo Proxy if you like slow, poorly-explained sci-fi... somethiiing.
Gate, if you're a fan of HFY.
Higurashi, if you like whiplash. This might be one of the times where the three episode rule might not be enough, but it's been a while; I don't recall exactly when the other shoe drops.
Kill la Kill, because it's awesome and Saved Anime.
Monster Musume because it's monster girls, come on.
WANPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWNCH!
And of course, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann because it is absurd.

If you liked Cowboy Bebop you'll probably like Samurai Champloo. It's fairly more linear and lighter in tone, and tends to repeat certain melodramatic beats (I don't know how many times somebody in that show falls to their presumed death only to reappear later) but the action and the animation are great, and the main characters' bickering dynamic grows on you.

Definitely this, it's something everyone who is interested in anime should see.

Angel Beats, if you have emotions and want to hurt.
Clannad and (especially) Clannad After Story if you shrugged off Angel Beats like it was nothing and you want to be reduced to a blubbering mess.

Stein's; Gate, if you like slow building scifi.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid if there isn't enough humorous cuteness in your life. On the cuteness front, also try Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka, and Nyanko Days.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 if you like large scale space scifi.

Kimi no Na wa (Your Name) for a beautifully animated, wonderfully scripted film that is not just a great anime but also a great movie.

Monogatari for intriguing supernatural-focused story and characters.

Dennou Coil for something a bit obscure that becomes really interesting. Mixes mild cyberpunk with urban legends.

I could add a lot (LOT!) more but I don't want to scare you off. :p

Edit: Oh yeah, and of course Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. When I was first talked into watching this, I thought "What, why is this so popular? It's kinda mundane." Then I reached Battle Tendency and thought "Oh my god this is amazing".

I think you have funimation confused with foxkids. Foxkids censored the fuck out of things, I don't recall funimation ever doing that.

OT: if you want a really good one check out Death Parade. Check out the opening.

The actual feeling of the show is nothing like the opening but I love the opening.

Yeah, that sounds like something I'd do :)

And that sounds right too because I remember a lot of those censorings happening due to morning cartoons, which I would imagine a studio called FoxKids would be doing rather than Funimation...

Fansub groups are Fairly Fantastic for shows that aren't licensed.

They kinda make my heart go Doki.

Some are so good that they'd likely cause various cats to Nyaa in appreciation.

Oh, and Crunchy Roll. They're decent.

Recommendations?

Youjo Senki.

Even has a (very behind) dub being done my Funimation on their streaming site.

While I haven't really done a through search, hulu ($11.99 a month for commercial free) does have a number of anime series. Though it looks like only a handful of them are dubbed.
As for suggestions, I'd say give Ergo Proxy, Gunslinger Girl, Psycho Pass and Claymore a shot. A long with some older titles like Blue Gender(not streaming on Netflix or hulu), Vision of Escaflowne (not on netflix or hulu) and Hellsing (on hulu), the first one, not Ultimate.

I will reiterate what everyone else has said. Crunchyroll is a good place to go. Many of the new shows dont have dubs of course, but many do; they are just 5 episodes or so behind the sub. Funimation is also a good place to go, but they have a lot of add interruptions. I think you also confused 4kids/fox with Funimation. 4kids was the ones that butchered the one piece dub and censored it to hell and back. Its also where the infamous "jelly donut" scene came from in Pokemon.

As for recommendations, Outlaw Star(may not be able to stream), Stein's;Gate, Re:Zero, My Hero Academia, One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100. You also might enjoy Blue Exorcist, but I suggest stopping about halfway through the first season, the skipping to the second season(the rest of the first season was filler and has nothing to do with the general story). If you are looking for something a bit more slower paced, Spice and Wolf is a great slice of life show about economics.

Who thought an anime about small scale late medieval or early renaissance trade and economics could be so fun and interesting? It's not too fast moving but the characterisation is wonderful.
