Where do you see the Tomb Raider franchise going?

Rise of the Tomb Raider was an improvement over an already excellent game, with a more intricate story, more engaging gameplay mechanics (especially weapons and stealth).

There are other factors to account for when thinking about the future other than the quality of the games themselves. For example, RotTB's initial sales were a little marred by the dubious marketing surrounding it. Hard to say what lessons Square Enix have learned.

Probably dead. Corporations tend to blame anything else before themselves, so Tomb Raiders lack of salea will probably be seen as a lack of interest in the franchise by consumers.

Another inevitable reboot in a few years.

I've got my fingers crossed for a return to the Tomb Raider of old, I'm so sick of all this gritty crap. I want my puzzle-solving high-flying self-confident snarky brit adventurer back.

I see a Lara croft vs Nathan Drake cross over. I'd pay money to see them duel to the death. My money is on Lara.

The inevitable Tomb Raider: Still Has Not Risen Quite Enough, is it not?

I liked the chain of small open areas that the TR2013 was, I liked how the game was quite polished and functional, but that's about it. I've chosen to completely ignore the story parts, I hated the "cinematic" sequences, and there was way too much shooting for my liking.

I will purchase the second game once it's heavily discounted and I will probably ignore most of the game the same way focusing only on tombs and stealth sections.
I had to force myself to read through the rest of your post when hitting this part. Why do you have to be like that? You're clearly a gamer who can string together an intelligible sentence... so why not give the story a chance? A single chance. If you're literally in this for the gameplay alone, then crap, I find that depressing.

The new Lara isn't that interesting since she's basically a discount Twilight Sparkle, but without enough colourful friends and awkward social situations to keep things interesting. She does not have any lust for treasure that I could sympathize with either. Just a nerdy girl that has power "because friends".
What.

The new Lara craves discovering history. It's her whole freaking story in RotTR. Sure, she wants to appease the memory of her father out of guilt for never believing his outlandish claims of the supernatural, but she was -already- a passionate archaeologist before she found there were actual spirit elements in the world. That's why she went to the Dragon's Triangle in the first gawd damned place.

"Twilight Sparkle"... I don't even... are you talking about her friendship with Sam? What's wrong with having friends?

Were you just in a bad mood when you made that post or something?

I want to see Lara in a Shadow of the Colossus cross-over. 3rd person Lara, with guns and ballistics, having to fight all 16 Colossii.

It's going to get flashier, more cinematic and more linear with each next entry.
Also, DLC, lots of DLC.

I want to see tomb raider go back to the old ways, cheesy tiger killing, cliff scaling fun, this new attempt to recreate lara made her character boring

I wouldn't bother. A lot of people seem to have a bone to pick with the new Lara. What actually happened is irreverent.

Well, I did not give the story a chance, because it immeadiately striked me as being excruciatingly boring. The slasher-movie cast of unlikeable characters, that weren't going to accomplish anything anyways. A protagonist devoid of any personal will and goals... Why would I want to give such a story a chance? Just a bunch of cardboard cutouts for shit to happen at.
So you decided to ditch the story and not engage with it and then you trash it for lacking things you can't know if it is lacking? One might suggest, as the easiest possible rebuttal, that the first cutscene tells us that Lara has the goal of becoming a world renowned explorer and archaeologist. Why? Because that cutscene establishes that she's entering an unexplored area looking for an island that supposedly housed a kingdom that hasn't been uncovered yet.

I don't remember her taking anything of historical value from that island.
Could it be because she ran into lots of people that wanted to kill her? Because her immediate goal once on the island was to get off it alive, not document all her historical findings?

Also, depending on how heavily you are into gameplay-story segregation, every time Lara visits one of the optional Tombs, that's supposedly Lara recovering artifacts.

I cannot pinpoint exactly what makes the plot of the game so boring, it's just there. Kind of like in Thief 2014.
I'll give you a hint: Your own preconceptions. If you don't give things a chance you'll never see their virtues. It is pretty basic psychology.

I dropped the game on a ship graveyard. Because sttory was incomprehensive mess of deliberate attempts to create compassion on basis of suffering. "Oooh, look, Lara is hurt again! And again! And again! See how she suffers?! See?!! You sure like her at this moment a lot!!!" - shouts the game; "No, I don't, - I reply, - Because what you are doing is not only taking a great character and turning her into a perpetual victim, but also doing it in a way that is ridiculous." The game should be over right in a cave with a spike - after this fall she'd break several ribs and suffer pain shock. Then the bear trap, which would more or less immobilize her. Then several additional falls. ANd then the radiotower sequence, when she climbs a huge metal tower without hand protection in a windy area with negative temperature. And I did not even say a word about huge break between cutscene Lara and gameplay Lara - those things do not affect each other at all. TS said

... but the story of TR2013 was horrible, and gameplay was meh at best.

So all I hope is this series will finally die.

that? :p

I'll be happy if the series keeps momentum, honestly.
Maybe we'll get something more and more puzzle oriented with every go.
Hopefully she'll evolve with every entry.

I suspect Lara will become a little more jaded and cynical after the even of RoTR. I usually stick to the bow, but I really want to see her pick up a second pistol. I want to see her become dangerous again. She used to have a yacht and a plane to travel the world. Everything about her screamed rich.

Given the massive own goal kicked by Crystal Dynamics and Squeenix, I'd say the franchise will be going back on the shelf for a while, unless the PC and PS4 sales end up being stellar (which I doubt).

I really dont know back in the day I strongly disliked the Tomb Raider franchise when core had it and I was not to keen on the ones before the reboot when Crystal Dynamics made those. The reboot however I really enjoyed and it actually made me like Lara as a character which I did not think would happen.

As for the new one I have not played it yet since I dont have an Xbox one and when it comes out on PC mine probably wont be powerful enough so I will have to wait a few more months for it on PS4 which doesnt really bother me since I have loads to play anyway. These sort of games always have a finite life I feel and I think they could continue to develop a couple more before the wheels fall off again and they have to leave it for 5 years or so.

Apparently sales were pretty low but maybe the time it was released and the fact it was Xbox One timed exclusive had something to do with that. Then again if it doesnt sell 50 million Square Enix will probably class it as a failure.
