Recently, I've been writing an essay on our country's Reproductive Health Bill (which I should probably be working on right now), and I have to say, there's a good bit of friction between the State and the Church around here recently because of it. In my opinion, this is the start of the waning of the Catholic Church's power over our country, however shallow that conclusion that may be, considering how small this incident may be compared to the history of the Church here is.

So my fellow Escapists, where do YOU see your country in fifty years?

I have no idea. I'd put at the very least a 20% probability on the singularity happening before then, and even if not there's bound to be something world-changing and completely unpredictable (by political analysis, anyway) happening. Fifty years strikes me as too far into the future to predict what'll happen with one specific country.

It's a tough call. Ireland's in a very strange place right now and it could go in any direction. We'll could be the EU's ***** because of the bail-out, we could be back to our own currency in some state of normality or we could still be in recession (which seems likely as it never ends).

Politically, we'll probably have the same neutral, middle-ground, no strong opinion parties. Maybe a little more influence from the left.

Culturally, I'd see us becoming much more diverse. We've had a large influx of immigrants in the past few years and in fifty year I see them integrating into our culture and us adopting some of their customs. Which will be cool.

The Catholic church will have lost all of it's political power. Although, that's probably going to happen in the next five given scandals like the Ryan Report and the Murphy Report.

...Pretty much that. Sadly. I can't see our current highway leading anywhere else.
I dunno, I think I'd enjoy that future. Assuming I survived, of course, because a wasteland situation would be fun as hell.

uhh, no. Most of us wouldn't last a week. Assuming we survived the radiation we'd get popped the second we poked our heads out of our fallout shelters, as the street gangs who survive the war are going to more or less instantly become roaming raider gangs with far more shooting experience than us.
Except I'm already a decent shot, and would only get better up until the day I got into my shelter. I give myself two weeks, but honestly, I'd rather take some with me than die old and afraid in a shelter.

I suspect the UK will slowly wane in power before finally becoming a aprt of the EU super-state that seems to be forming. I'm happy enough with that future. presuming the Singularity doesn't occur beofre then, of course.

Depends, if Chavez "wins" again, we'll have to put up with his shit until 2021 or later, and after he resigns, we get his daughter (kinda like what goes on North Korea).

If he loses in november though, I say we got a good future ahead, it'll be very hard to reach stability, but we'll reach it alright.

I honestly wouldn't mind if my country (America) got reborn as a new state of government or just radical change in general. I am just sick of the bullshit that comes every time a bill like SOPA or that new defense bill and the public pleads to no avail that they not be dumb as stumps. It's time for a new government, preferably not one where our country is run by rich old guys.

Why are you guys turning this into an "apocalypse survival" thread?

Either back to a sense of normalcy, or engulfed in a brutal civil war.
I'm still not sure which, 50/50 shot I'd reckon.

I'm American, BTW.
