Where does all this PC Vs. Console argument come from anyway?

Well basically whats doing?
Why do people keep getting into flaming wars, and massive forum arguments over which is better?

so far all i hear from the PC crowd is, PC gaming is so much better because of technically better graphics then consoles, and the controls are better etc etc.

all i here from the console crowd is that the PC gamers who argue this are nothing but elitists.

EDIT: Also forgot to add the other argument that's used a lot, and one that annoys me greatly is the notion that PC gaming is dead. <<< that is a load of crap, because there are people still playing, and no matter how aptly people put that it is dead, it's not. i mean look at Korea for christ's sake, Starcraft is their national sport. and remember saying PC gaming is dead in a figural way in regards to genres and all that crap does not even count as an argument. ANYWAY, back to the point.

cant we all just live in gaming harmony? i mean half the topics i see in forums about games always involve someone saying PC better than console, and that then the console crowd retaliates with the more arguments.

Okay so they're are some key gameplay differences between versions of certain games, and yeah the graphics might look better on PC, and the controller is more convenient to play with the a whole keyboard of buttons, but in the end is it really worth it to fight over which one is better?

i dunno in personal opinion i reckon it's a negative aspect for gaming.

EDIT 2: I like both styles of gaming console and PC, and believe developer's should put more effort into making their games more cross-platform friendly.

It won't happen. Everyone will always find something to complain about. I am a PC gamer solely, although I used to play consoles up until PS3/Xbox 360 came out. I have no issue with stuff being made for PC and console, the problem is lazy ports usually suck.
If developers took the time to take each platform in mind, it'd be a lot better.

as far as I know, from the 90s, then it sort of went down a little late 90s-early 2000s

and now it's come back quite strongly, but that's as far as I know =P

Eh, I like the idea of consoles and all, but ... when games are being developed for rubbish hardware, my version of the game suffers as a result.

The argument comes from this console generation being too old.

I've been playing on both consoles and PC my entire life;
IMO I'd imagine a lot of the arguments come from the homogenization of both of these sectors of gaming. Both are becoming more like each other, which is bad for both of them as now neither group is really getting what they want out of a game.

We can't have fast paced action games without having to stop to apply PC RPG elements every 10 minutes, equipping items and leveling my character. Nor can we have a thoughtful and tactical RPG (or heaven forbid, turn based) games because all RPG's now, for some unknown reason, need to have faced paced action.

What we're seeing is really a degradation of the strengths of each platform, and I feel this frustrates a lot of gamers and thus leads to finger pointing.

EDIT:
Also, as someone who favors the PC I want a console exclusive player to think about the shitty ports PC gamers have to deal with. I've had games tell me, "Press
to jump" when I don't even have a controller plugged in.

If you were playing on the PS3 and you saw this, how would you feel? You would feel like an afterthought, and it's not a good feeling.

I believe the PCers originally were defending, and now are offending. The way I see it is that xBoxers and PS3ers are very pretentious, which is why I now have an immediate dislike towards them.

It comes from console only players thinking that's all that matters and nothing else is needed, not realizing that all games are made on PC's. You can't say PC gaming is dead until Halo or God of War are made on a console.

Console and PC gamers are at war? Since when?

A console, a PC, a portable, a cell phone... all of these have their strengths and weaknesses, and I love having all of them around. We need games like Infinity Blade showing what the iPad can do just like we need Wiimotes waggling with Red Steel 2 and PC's blazing for Starcraft II and controllers rumbling from Halo and God of War.

PC is far from dead, and it's hilarious to hear people say it. The only difference is PC is no longer the leader. That is all. It's the same as when Sega was once the industry leader, or when arcades phased out. They're just not the go-to-place for the best and newest games all the time... yet they still are plenty of times (modern PC games still far outclass six-year-old consoles graphically). Still, with MMOs, RTSs, Valve and Steam, and adventure games thriving on the PC, in addition to all the healthy PC ports of popular games, PC still contributes a sizable share of game revenue compared to consoles.

And consoles, of course, are becoming more and more adopted and accepted by the mainstream to the point of BEING the mainstream.

All of these are good things. I feel they offer differing, but equal, contributions to the industry.

Pretty much this.

@OP
I used to game on consoles, now I'm on PC.

Try playing a console port on a PC, most feel like a watered down versions of a full game.

And most PC games can't be ported to console, because of the depth of controls.

It would be nice if people could get along and were able to discuss the respective strengths and weaknesses (and opinions on such) of these platforms without bashing each other.

I myself loath gamepads, and I find there are a lot of gamers (even on the PC) who loath using a keyboard and mouse. Thankfully we've always found camaraderie in disliking a control scheme and we've been able to discuss this without bashing the others preference here. In fact I've found a lot of support among gamepad fans for the XBox 360 to require a keyboard+mouse option just as GFW titles are required to have a gamepad option.

Reason I like this site is the flamewars are kept to a minimum. I love both, always have and always will.

What I don't understand is all the "why all the flamewar?" threads. Seriously, we all know the reasons, whether we participate or not.

When the Xbox came out, you could see resources moving away from PC gaming into multi-platform ventures. In that moment, gaming changed in a very fundamental way. PC fans tend to resent the move away from their platform... and quite a lot of console fans resent the changes wrought by the invasion of FPS-centric PC developers.

I think he means, that the actual development process (programming, creating music, art assets, etc.) is done on a console. I kind of did a double take when I read it as well.

From the PC side, this really is the main thing it's about. Devs release a good console game and promise us they'll bring it to the PC, everyone looks forward to it, it's eventually released and... it's shit.
It's also partly the way console developers (and some players) keep accusing us PC gamers of being pirates, one and all.

I think both groups are competing for attention from AAA developers. If something goes console exclusive, PC gamers will feel excluded while if something is PC exclusive, console gamers will feel excluded. People will become more emotional because they want more games as well more game industry resources (multiplayer servers, bug fixes, etc.) diverted to their platform of choice.
