while not entirely horror, i feel inclined to suggest The Condemned
it may not be horror exactly, but it had that same sorta jumpy feel to it
I found myself reminiscing of the days of RE1-3, Silent Hill & Alien Trilogy, while playing

I blame the influx of action horror games, like Resident Evil 4 and 5. Before they came along, I think more games that were horror or survival horror were more true to the namesake. xD
I utterly hate both RE4 and RE5 and I do not consider them horror at all they are nothing like em :/

Back on topic try Amnisia i heard some good stuff from people

Amnesia and Penumbra are good, although the latter has a lot of puzzle solving which very much breaks the immersion. Although it is still good.
Seriously though, I have heard people say Penumbra is scarier than Amnesia, it all depends on your preferences of scenery and style. Amnesia takes place in an abandoned castle and you are hunted by the darkness, Amnesia also has the physics engine they used in Penumbra but it is more perfected. Penumbra takes place in an abandoned mine, in the first Penumbra game it is pretty uneventful until at least the second half. But Penumbra Black Plague is really good, you get actual monsters who look like they're Alien Zombies with fire axes.

Penumbra

Amnesia

I hear a fourth Fatal Frame game is going to come out, anyone remember fatal frame? The game where you have to take photos of ghosts to kill them.

I personally didn't find eternal darkness all that scary, but that might be due to the fact i have been spoiled by Siren, and the Project zero series. I did find eternal darkness however, to be the much better game over all those other "horror" games though.

I heard that Amnesia game on PC is supposed to be pretty good. Otherwise, I haven't seen a horror game since the PS2.
Yeah same, a friend of mine who never gets creeped out by games was pretty scared when playing this one.

There were never a great deal of horror games to begin with. It's also pointless to say "true horror" as everyone has something different they find scary. What might be a walk in the park through mulberry lane for you, will be someone elses worst nightmare.

I don't think it's fair to say that any one game has "cheap" scares.. if you really think about it, there isn't a single game that should truly horrify anyone. The only thing a video game can do to you is waste your time when you die. If the game is immersive (according to firefox immersive isn't a real word ..), you will feel your heart beat faster just at the thought of turning that next corridor not knowing what lies behind it. If the game is fun, the "cheap" scares will be good enough, because who really plays a video game to horrify themselves? People that need something better to do. :p (I play to have fun personally :)).

I think that Deadspace1/2 pull off the fighting for your life while occasionally getting the pants scared off of you thing quite nicely. Sure, you can fight back but when could you really not? I guess if the baddies are ghosts.. but haven't you ever watched a scary movie and the bloke just runs away and you think... dude there's a huge branch on the ground right there (or a rock) pick it up and fight back?

When people quote Amnesia as being the only true horror game in a while, I think to myself "why would that be fun?" is running away from things for hours on end really that fun? Maybe you have to like puzzle games to enjoy that type of thing, but I would rather just play a game that challenges me and entertains me. Not makes me feel helpless and show me a bloody GAME OVER screen every 10 minutes because something that's invincible killed my polygonal counterpart.

Besides the mentioned Amnesia and Penumbra which you should get, look back at the older games.
GoG has the horrible Phantasmagoria [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/phantasmagoria] and its sequel [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/phantasmagoria_2] available. Don't let the fact these games are 15 years old discourage you.

(Wimp Disclaimer: Amnesia is proven itself to be too scary for me, and Phantasmagoria's gore is really over the top so I can't really take it either. But these games are good horror.
The Penumbra series is also extremely scary, but that I can take without either feeling sick or getting a heart attack. If getting just one game, get Penumbra: Black Plague.)

I noticed that no one is mentioning the Dead Space games. I think that was supposed to be the new RE or SH franchise, but I'm glad they're self-conscious enough to veer into action adventure territory with the sequel.

But they're eminently playable, well-crafted and have amazing sound design. The horror wanes when you start looking forward to your next necromorph encounter because the weapons are so much fun to use.

As far as "real horror" is concerned, I am happy everyone is pointing at Frictional in the thread, it's nice that an indie company has made such a big name for itself.

I think the best horror games came out last gen, but like many people above me have said, you should definitely try out Amnesia: The Dark Descent. A damn scary game.

its not that its scary its that it really messes with your mind once you get the magics your pretty much unkillable but all the stuff it dues it dues psychological part like the first time you play and if you got low Sanity at the end of the one chapter it says stay tuned for eternal darkness 2 >_> that was like WTF

Gaming has become sort of like the radio now days. All of the AAA titles you always hear about and see in stores are pretty much all the same, and are dumbed down in one genre and made more actiony (like how music is, only radio music is made more poppy). So, to find a game such as a true horror game, you need to look for old games or indie titles, because, chances are, anything in a store will be action with horror elements.

Good point. Sadly you can scratch the silent hill series of that list. The american counterparts of konami have taken over that once beautifully atmospheric & sureal horror series & loaded it up with action & over inflated visual effects like with homecoming & the new one thats coming out. Now its no different to a resident evil game with zero fear factor.
