I heard that Amnesia game on PC is supposed to be pretty good. Otherwise, I haven't seen a horror game since the PS2.
It is - And Penumbra. Also, Pathologic may not be Scary in itself, but the atmosphere is just dreadful. (Dreadful as in Horror Dreadful - Its a compliment)

As everyone else has said, definitely Amnesia. I personally thought that Metro 2033 was kinda scary. Tense perhaps. Good game regardless.

I also think very highly of a game called Cryostasis.

Here's a tricky one. Not everyone can be engrossed by text games, but if you're even a little into them try this out.

There's a few good ones on here but I think this is the strongest.

How about you try Deadly Premonition? Pretty good game, and fits into the genre nicely.
epic lol your calling Deadly Premonition a horror. I did have Deadly Premonition and i found my self laughing at almost all of the game, don't get me wrong it was good but no replay value for me.
The raincoat killer is the basic scary guy, you don't know who he is and he's stronger than you so thats meant to scare you. but i kept thinking why he never tried to shoot him you only ran and hide like a little *****.

The enemy's in the game aren't scary, they confused real ugly things with horror.

I thought it was scary at first until the comedy came in, when ever comedy is mixed with horror it never works. but the comedy was enough to make me play to the end.

I didn't think Cryostasis was very good. I called basically every scare before it happened, and it relied too much on jump scares IMO.

As the title says where have they gone. iv'e looked around the game stores and the xbox live market place and i can find any good horror games in this age. people say dead space 2 is a horror but they all talk bull iv'e played it and the only time it made me jump is where i get hit by people just of screen (cheap scares). no game last year was a horror or the year before that and none this year so far if anyone can recommend me some for pc or 360 go ahead and try prove me wrong.
The horror games went the same place as your grammar, i.e. to hell.

Seriously though, I'd recommend Amnesia: The Dark Descent, though I have of course been massively ninja'd by probably 46 people already. Also, though it's not exactly recent, if you can track down a copy of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, then do so, and play that. Not massively scary in most parts, but there are some pretty genuinely terrifying moments, especially the mansion level...

Amnesia, I'm not a big fan of horror games (huge fan of John Carpenter's movie The Thing though), but I tried Amnesia and if I had the balls I would so have played that, but damn it scared the shit out of me.

The weird thing is , I think the scariest game I have played in a while is Demon's Souls. Just because it's the only game I have played in a long time that makes me not want to go around the next corner. What's going to kill me this time?! The last game that made me feel that hesitant and tense was Res Evil 1. Scary is one thing, but absolute tension in another. Never knowing if you are going to die in the next ten seconds goes a long way for me. In Demon's Souls you are never more than a short walk away from certain doom, and no amount of ammo or health can prevent it. Ooooooh scary!

I blame the influx of action horror games, like Resident Evil 4 and 5. Before they came along, I think more games that were horror or survival horror were more true to the namesake. xD
I utterly hate both RE4 and RE5 and I do not consider them horror at all they are nothing like em :/

Back on topic try Amnisia i heard some good stuff from people
I disliked those 2 installments, as they made things much too action related. The other resident evils however were pretty good in the scare factor, at least for me. Especially 1 2 and 3. :O
S.T.AR.S...... Jill: You want stars Il show you stars *bang*

I loved 1,2,3 so much and 0 wasnt half bad imo
