I miss stealth games. I particularly miss the tenchu series, although I love the metal gear series and I like making "stealthy" characters in Oblivion and Fallout (Admittedly the experience is a bit of a cheap ride compared to actual stealth games). I've also been curious about the Thief series but I wonder if I could stomach the graphics.

I love the Assassin's Creed series but it's barely a stealth game, by that I mean there is hardly any consequence for not being stealthy...With the exception of maybe the multiplayer.

The trend seems to be that they just make a couple of "stealth" missions in an fps/action game just for the variety and call it a day. Where have all the actual stealth games gone?

They're still there, you just can't see them because they're hiding.
Sorry, an obvious stealth joke had to be made.

There's still the occasional stealth game, just they don't seem to sell as well as simple shoot 'em ups and are a lot harder to make so many developers don't bother or just tack a stealth mission on or two.

into obscurity.

because the public prefers action games and games with weak protagonists who can't gun down a whole room with their fists and live to tell the tale don't stand much of a chance in today's gaming industry.

they're probably still out there, but they're now just a very small niche thing.

That's a shame. I wonder if the lack of success IS because of the American (or Human?) need to strive towards being all powerful instead of being able to skulk better in the shadows.

Do not forget that they're also working on the next Thief sequel. Let's just hope that that THI4F abomination is just a working title.

Though the (most likely) truth has been said already, I'm a tad more optimistic (though it's an admittedly forced one at that). I think they've just been pushed onto the publishing and development "backburners", kinda like tactical shooters nowadays. With FPS and action/adventure/fantasy games selling so well, they've kind of pushed the fringe games of their respective genres into the "one of these days for nostalgia &/or reboot" corner of the development pile.

aww poor stealth games...

I imagine a place where all the forgotten genres go to die. Green pastures where stealth games are happily playing with the pet/monster raising and tycoon games. You will be missed.

p.s. I'd have to respectfully disagree that it's a good thing.

I have mixed feelings about Theif 4.
I want it to be made, I want a worthy successor. But if they f*ck Garrett up or the gameplay, I swear to you I will...
NOT BUY THE COLLECTORS' EDITION.

That is all.

Stealth games are just not contemporary. They're not the hottest thing on planet Earth anymore.

God knows I love that quote.

Anyway the stealth genre is pretty much dead. The new Hitman game is supposed to come out soon but unless I'm tragically misinformed it will move the genre two steps back one step to the side. As in easier gameplay, more accessible, less planning required, less complexity, less options, no thinking required.

They all just stopped being good... I do love a good stealth game, but it's been so long since one came out that didn't suck I've kind of given up on the whole genre.
