Well they were always a niche thing and with all publishers opting for smash hits there isn't much love for them.

Stealth, like survival horror and RTS is not a guaranteed sell. Shooters and RPG's are, hence the influx in that genre.

It will diversify eventually just not now.

Prepare yourself for Dishonored. Bethesda teamed up with the makers of Thief, and at least from the Game Informer article it looks VERY in-depth. Not only must you be stealthy to survive, every action you take will drastically affect the environment. Let's not forget, it also has promises of Lovecraftian storytelling. Basic overview from my perspective: Thief meets Bioshock, in a good way.

Indeed, and when they're completely done with DX:HR they'll likely shift staff to accelerate thief 4 (i refuse to write it another way...), these are the 2 "big" projects they're working on at the moment.

This year is Deus Ex: Human Revolution, next year is Hitman: Absolution and Metal Gear Solid Rising. It's actually better then ever.

@ Cpt_Oblivious - Wow. Joke ninjad on the first post!

That sounds like it could be a winner, DE:HR is looking fairly decent at this point, hopefully they won't stuff up the Thief franchise....

They've gone the way of Space Sims.

Although, if Skyrim fixes the AI problems of Oblivion, it could turn out to be a good stealth game. I think it could end up being more fun if it's a choice.

They've been absorbed by Deus Ex HR and Hitman Absolution.
They are still around, just less likely to sell well as others have pointed out, so if they don't already have a franchise made from it it isn't likely to attract attention.

by that I mean there is hardly any consequence for not being stealthy.
Metro 2033 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. place value on stealth, higher difficulties can be mitigated in stalker with gear but Metro especially on ranger will grind your organs into hotdogs for small slights, and on ranger ammo is very scarce and you can be torn to shreds fairly easily.

Conviction has consequences but they arent overwhelming as long as you think fast, realistic still makes me bite my nails every so often.

Skyrim will hopefully fix some problems, I can and will hope.

Amnesia... sleep was lost. *flip table*

Metro Last Light looks like it will eat your children but maybe not, looking at 2033 I can already see the knife being my best friend again.

and the others already said that I dont bothering repeating, I just hope skyrim works out oblivions problems.

So stealth based mechanics and love isnt gone just hard to not do mediocre.

Current generation apparently don't like subtle games so everything adventury has to conform to action and pure spectacle.

I for one miss horror games with actual horror in them.
