Because here, we ALL believe in the stupid Christian idea of Hell and Heaven.
No, I don't believe in Hell, Hades, or whatever. Same goes for afterlife.
There is no good and evil, morals are purely constructed, and the whole idea of a plane where so called "souls" of people go to suffer for eternity because they don't conform to a set of stupid rules made by a tiny fraction of people, usually in flames, is simply mindbogglingly idiotic.
First of all, all the feelings you get happen in your brain, with the help of your nerves in many cases. Assuming that something so unrealistic like a "soul" exists, it will not have a biological body to experience pain. Hell, it will not have memory or brain at all, because your memory and what you are is stored inside your brain. You die, you rot, you're gone. Or in some cases, you don't even have to die for it. Just get hit with a brick on the head or something (Yes, overly simplistic. I'm well aware of the plethora of horrible afflictions of the mind people experience...)
So, if your body rots - or even gets cremated, there is no more you. Even if some kind of a non-material thing existed, a "soul", it would not be you. All that defines you as you, namely, your memory and to the lesser extent the rest of your body, is gone.
Hell and heaven (and their variation) are both stupid concepts made by ancient people who needed a way to keep people in line. Just punishment doesn't really stop anyone from doing things you for whatever reason do not want, so you brain wash them and their children into believing into some bullshit afterlife where you'd be punished/rewarded for whatever you've done.
Oh, and the same thing goes for heaven. Or, indeed, most variations of it. Don't you think that after centuries of existing religions that had millions of members, and some, indeed, still plague us today, the whole heaven/hell places would be a bit crowded? Especially by people who can't even understand each other because you try putting a person from 1200's and a person from 2000's together. Even if they "magically" (which apparently is the only way to justify all this idiocy) speak the same language, guess what? There is no connection between a person from 1200s and a today's person.
You could write 10 tomes worth of rants on why exactly Hell/Heaven, afterlife, or religion in general are extremely wrong and idiotic concepts, but why bother. Let the stupid have their opium.
