Mine has been dead for a while. Several bands are trying to work it in, and some are succeeding, but mostly it's dead.

I am of course, talking about progressive 70s rock. Like Pink Floyd.

I listen to stoner/doom rock and it's basically the same old beast it's always been. Bands still sound as slow and heavy as Sabbath did. But if it's a winning formula why change it?

I don't care what "category" a song belongs to. I only care if I like how it sounds.

For the sake of this topic, however, I will submit "alternative" as two of my favorite bands (apparently) belong to this category. (They Might Be Giants and Dinosaur Jr., if you're interested)
I agree, but a lot of music is really heading down the proverbial shitter.

As for me, I like Three Days Grace. Don't care about the genre, just like the music!

I can't speak for a genre in general, but given that so many modern "artists" use things like auto-tune to prevent the public's reaction to their live performance varying from the album version (seriously, people think they lip-synch because they can't duplicate perfectly their album version live), coupled with the public's over-emphasis on the physical traits and attractiveness of their "stars", I think we're seeing the music industry in general swing away from one composed of soulful artists bearing their emotions to rhythm and melody, and to a glorified popularity contest or "prom king/queen" rehash, which is, frankly, disturbing on a level I scarce thought possible.

When people like Justin Bieber are counted among musical artists, it's clear that the industry is sick, and that this illness is neither acute nor curable.

Well Fela is dead, but Afro-Beat lives on, we have Femi, Antibalas, The Public Opinion, Chopteeth etc. etc. Daptone is looking after Soul, and Skip-Hop is the future of hip-hop.

Oh and Kurt, grunge etc has dated heavily but was great at the time because it got rid of all those lame hair-metal bands. It was so refreshing at the time to listen to music with balls that wasn't made by poodles. You really had to be there.

System of a down (yes, I classify that as a genre) has been on hiatus for some time, but their off-projects are mostly great and hopefully they will reunite after serj's next album.

I'm just gunna say it. Grunge is dead. I don't care what grunge band from the 90s is doing today, its not the same as it will ever be. And you wanna know what really got rid of all hope for me? That one fucking song Pearl Jam came out with back in 2009 that was really popular. It didn't even come close to sounding like grunge. It was fucking worse than most of this mainstream modern alternative shit. Hell, grunge was dead even while Kurt was alive. He wore a shirt saying the exact words, "Grunge is dead". If the fucking godfather of the genre is saying that, then its true.
