Dunkaroos. I don't know what happened. I used to love the stuff as a kid, but I never see them in stores anymore. It's a shame.
Weren't they those kangaroo shaped biscuits that you would dip in the chocolate spread like chips and dip? Then you would always run out of the kangaroos and have to use your finger.

I remember these!! They were the best in school lunches...=D Like those Le Snack (or was it Le Snak?) cheese dip things...(which you can still buy, but I'm afraid that kind of cheese, like those 'plastic cheese' slices that come pre-packaged, only taste good when you're about 6. =D

Mine would have to be Raspberry Toaster Strudel. They just randomly stopped carrying them, they were my favourites.

It was famous candy bars smushed into a tiny ball. IT WAS FUCKEN AMAZING
What? Buncha-Crunch or some other candy?
You could buy your favorite candy in ball form. For example you could buy reeses candy in ball tiny ball form. The outside would be choco and the inside penutbutter

(I think there american only)
We have this stuff in NZ too...like Mars Bars etc, made in miniature, spherical form. They're awesome at the movies...

I'm not quoting you so much for your post, Cricket, as I am hoping you can help me. I went to New Zealand for a school trip a couple years ago and there was some ice cream you can apparently only get there because thats where the nut they put in it grows, would you happen to know the name of this ice cream flavour?
Was it macadamia ice cream? I'm afraid I can't think of a nut that only grows in NZ - macadamias are pretty big in Australia too, I believe...was it just that nut flavour or was it nut and something else? Was it something you had here (if so, whereabouts?) or was it something you heard about?

I had it while there, on the North Island I believe, a stop between Rotorua and Auckland. Was around a coal power plant if I remember right.

Sounds like somewhere around Huntly - was it a specific brand, or was it a local, homemade kind of thing? Sorry for all the questions, but every small town in New Zealand has its own special local kind of fudge or ice cream or something (which makes long car trips fun), and it can be hard to narrow down the possibilities. There's a fantastic ice-cream brand in NZ called Kapiti Ice Cream, which is NZ-wide, which makes a variety of specialty ice cream flavours...maybe it was one of those?

That may have been what it was then. I don't mind the questions, just wish I could remember a few more of the details, our tour guide said the name of the city the plant was but I can't think of it for the life of me. I think he said the plant was the largest in the country or something like that, if that helps any.

Ah, hokey-pokey...now that is a true childhood icon! So, did you save all the caramel bits until the last mouthful, or did you eat them with the icecream? We used to collect them all up to see who got the most...(as you do when you're a kid)

Sounds like Huntly - it's smack-bang between Auckland and Rotorua and it's NZ's largest thermal power station. As for the ice cream...NZ's north island seems to be really big on growing macadamias...but that's all I can find, I'm afraid. I wanted to link you the homepage for the Kapiti Ice Cream company, but the website seems to be unreachable at the moment...any more details you can dredge up would be great. I'm curious too, now!

I'm so glad somebody else remembers those. I would always put a heart stopping amount of frosting on each one so I would usually run out of that before the biscuits.

I looked it up because the name sounded familiar, and I'm really beginning to think it was hokey pokey ice cream now, not certain though, because I'd swear I remember him saying something about nuts in it.

You've got the location bang on, I looked up a picture of the Huntly power station, and that's the one we stopped near. It's a beautiful country you're living in down there, can't wait to go back one of these days.

Pop Tarts.

No idea where they went, but I loved the toasted bastards. Sure, they fucked up my body because of their rather large sugar contents, but they tasted like heaven.
Oh God, I haven't had Pop Tarts in forever. Though I still see them on the shelves.

As for me it's not so much that my tasty childhood treats are gone from the shelves, it's that everything tastes like shit now cause it's all fat/sugar-free. Give me back my damn tasty treats. If the fat fucks who munch that shit down don't know how to eat in moderation, that's their fucking problem. I shouldn't have to suffer for their obeisity

Edit: Also angel's delight, why in the name of all that is good did they take that away?

This topic is about iconic foods of your childhood that you loved, but suddenly and cruelly disappeared from supermarket shelves, never to be seen again...

Mine would be Daisy Pudding, a wonderful, custardy dairy-food type thing that tasted of vanilla and dreams...

This also covers iconic foods of your childhood that you:

a) just don't eat any more;
b) still consume like they were going out of fashion;
c) miss because you've moved away from the country you were born in/they were produced in...

And also things like fast food outlets (*sniff* I miss you Georgie Pie!)
I've been a dairy manager for over 10 years. I've oddly never heard of Daisy Pudding. The same people that make Daisy Sour Cream perhaps? Don't remember it as a child either.

I do love me some oreos and milk though!
I'm pretty sure it was made by Swiss Maid...If I could find a picture of it i'd post it, but it's been out of production for like 15 years or something, so...*sigh* Wish I could taste it again...

Glad you had a good time here - hope you come visit again soon! I have to say, it was probably Hokey-Pokey - that is like the number 1 kiwi classic iconic ice-cream. It's not that you *couldn't* get it anywhere else, it's jut that no-one really seems to make it outside NZ, and of course, we'd make the best stuff anyway =) There are many brands, most of which are very good, but the true classic is Tip Top Hokey Pokey Ice Cream...the mere thought of it conjures up mental images of lazy, summery Christmases on the beach... *dreams* =)

The "Koetjes reep"! (Cow bar) These imitation chocolate bars (mostly milk) were an icon from my youth! But they stopped manufacturing them because of an ocean of other candy. Damn you nestle!
It's still in our store, actually. I hate them though, they taste nothing like real chocolate.

Anyway, as far as I can recall, all my childhood loves are still there. Woohoo!
