Canada

It can take place in the future, after Canada has used it's secret underground cyborg armies to invade the US.

Judging by the contents of this article: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=175552

I'd say Japan, though I haven't played Assassin's Creed 2 yet, so if there's anything the discredits that then don't tell me what it is.
That's an old article referring to the end of the first Assassin's Creed. Let's face it, they were way off the mark.

Modern Day America where Desmond is right now I think it makes sense, It would be like mirrors edge but in third-person

I think it should be set during the French Revolution. There's enough chaos and death going on around that time that an assassin would blend in.

Having played part 2 into the ground and getting every achievement except for the last 15 feathers or so(which I will get!) I would have to think that the game is going to be split. Desmond is now a legitimate assassin so he will have some adventures in the real world, more than likely in Egypt and Japan. With the animus' bleeding effect he'll probably be going back in time again ever so often taking the form of yet another descendant set in WWII judging from the hints in the game. Also much to my chagrin it will probably be a woman if the hints in AssCreedII have anything to do with it. :(
I bet i hope firearms dont ruin the series. the one in ac2 was wierd to use.

If it will be set in the future I will have no respect left for it.

Assassins like Ezio and Altair are not efficient when it comes to bullets.

I'm hoping for Desmond to die, and then some strange plot twist tells you that his psyche has gone back in time to feudal Japan, and you get to assassinate people there. It would be just as plausible as the end to AC2, and we wouldn't have to deal with that annoying Desmond.
Jerk your wapanese fantasies elsewhere, it's blatantly not going that way.

Victorian England gets my vote. Or France during the french revolution (Scarlet Pimpernel, anyone?). There will be one set in the 'present' eventually but I don't think it's quite time yet, he still needs to do something in a gun-toting era...
Great, now I have an image of the Desmond ancestor breaking into song and dance (only know the theatrical version)

It makes sense for the story to continue on in the present day. I wish it would be set somewhere else. Maybe you could play as a younger person growing up through World War I, then time jumps forward to WWII and the now older assassin kills Hitler.

Based on the plot so far, I think it makes the most sense to go to Middle America. They need to fit the Mayans in somehow.

It could be in the future and work out, the people who came to catch desmond at the end of AC2 didn't have guns, so im betting they'll throw some "mega corporations rule the world and outlawed guns" thing in and enemies will have like stun batons instead of swords.

The other possibilty (that i think) is that you go into the animus as a much farther back ancestor to find out more about the vaults of the gods, since they have to rap it up with this one (i'm pretty sure they said its a trilogy?) it will either be you going really far back with the animus to find the vaults and then sending out assassin teams to get the pieces of eden, or ditching the animus and you fighting the templar corporations.

Another thing that would be sweet is since the truth video puzzles showed that many famous leaders from history had pieces of eden, going back and reliving a bunch of different time periods (like each sequence as a different ancestor) to locate the pieces of eden. But it did show that a lot of modern leades like FDR and Hitler had them, so they wouldnt be able to put you in a place without guns, and personally i think guns would ruin the gameplay, so i dont know.

How did you find out about the cyborgs?!
All Canadians know about the Cyborgs, someones been messing with you if you think everyone around you isn't supposed to know.

The trick is to keep mentioning it publically, everyone else thinks we're joking.

Hmmm.

I think it's a certain that the modern day will be far more prevalent, and I doubt there will be any more Animus interaction.

"Why?" I hear you cry - well, Desmond has clearly started suffering from the bleeding effect (with the Altair "dream") so I'd say we'll be dropping in to the past more naturally - maybe Desmond (but not the player) will be able to control it. I believe Shaun mentions about the bleeding effects being OK, except no one can control it.

Also, read this:

http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:VFOXHOUNDv/Theories_of_the_Future

(Safe link, it's just a wiki).

That all makes sense - I mean, perfectly. Excalibur and the Holy Grail being the next two pieces of Eden (the sword and the cauldron).

Avalon is where Arthur found Excalibur. Avalon is apparently famous for it's apples (according to Wikipedia), and I'm pretty sure that I've read somewhere that Avalon and Eden are the same place (or different versions of the same place). Eden being where "Those Who Came Before" lived and (presumably) created the Pieces of Eden.

However, I would say that we'd then be going back in time from AC2 - meaning less weapons and gameplay elements to mess around with; so I'd say it's not as likely as it would first appear.

anywhere in the past, except for ancient persia, then it would just be prince of persia but lacking the sand zombies

Desmond seems to be of Middle Eastern ancestry though, so I guess they went back there before coming to the states.

Feudal Japan - Ninja Assassin!
Victorian England - Steampunk Assassin!
1920's America - Mob Assassin!
China - Martial Arts Assassin!
World War 2 - French Assassin! (That idea is moot now since they did Saboteur, but a German version would be interesting)

Modern is a definite no, unless they give him laser claws or something.
