Presumably it would need to come from a combination of God and Merlin.

WoW isn't just a game anymore, it's pretty much a cultural and social phenomenom at this point. Lineage 2 can boast some lout sueing the company for wasting his life on the game, bah, WoW can boast murder, suicide, theft, romance, advertising, lore obsessives and one of the only mmorpgs that everyone at least has some idea about.

It can only be the next Blizzard MMO. Nobody else has the successful experience to actually do it. WoW has been in development, and still is, for 10 years. The only people to beat are themselves.

I can tell you what it won't be - SWTOR.

As others have said the only thing that will kill WoW is Blizzard. Unfortunately this isn't something that other MMO developers seem to grasp, so they launch their games big, and then within a year they panic because they don't have a million subscribers and either merge the servers (losing the confidence of subscribers they do have) or collapse under the weight of their own ambition, like APB.

There's a real risk of SWTOR going for a bigger launch than it can handle and suffering the same fate. I don't think it would collapse entirely like APB, but Warhammer Online and AoC both had to scale back their ambitions when reality set in, and if SWTOR believes its own hype it'll go the same way.

From R'lyeh.

Anyway, whatever game will 'kill' WoW, it has to make sure that it does not try to be WoW. Which is what all have tried up to this point

WoW won't be slain by another, but maybe by age.

KOTOR won't "kill" WoW either, Bioware are known for story, and unlike raiding progression, there's only so much more story Bioware can deliver, they're also limited by Star Wars Canon and don't have as much freedom as WoW has because of that.

Playable content is always going to reign supreme.

I doubt WoW needs a killer (horrible phrasing). It does look like it's (very very very very) slowly dying on its own.
Funny, since the population is higher now than it's ever been before. It's also increasing, not decreasing.

The only thing that can stop WoW is Blizzard's next MMO, which is at least 3 years away.

Didn't it stop growing in February or something?

Also, I did say very very very slowly. Three years is very very very slowly.

It won't be ToR, go look up the EA louse. There was some chap from the gaming industry slating the work done on ToR right now.
Apparently the staff know it's garbage and nobody expects much.

I highly doubt all the promises that ToR is making, but I'll wait and see.

The WoW killer will come from Blizzard. And only Blizzard. At this point, it's not just an MMO, it's a pop culture phenomenon, which means they don't even need advertising anymore.
IM pretty sure is gonna be call world of starcraft
Much as I want that, won't happen.

Something which most people don't take into account is that WotLK expansion was a mediocre one in terms of dungeon and raid content, and looking at how Cataclysm is shapping up, all old accounts will be massively reactivated. The game is a marvel especially in the new zones arhitecture (see Throne of the Tides, Uldum etc) and boss encounters as in boss encounters being actualy really hard and requiring a strong focused group of people to work.

Well, we can't know whether that's legit or not. Also, even if it is, the guy clearly has a personal bone with EA, so I would not trust it that much.

Not really THAT slowly, it'll take a while sure but 3-5 years it'll be more or less dead I think

The "WoW Killer" will most likely come from the United States. Possibly Florida. You can only hack a man's account so many times before he decides to take matters into his own hands...
