Since I've started reading Star Wars: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron, I've begun to hanker for a good space combat sim.
Sure, X-Wing is on Steam, and there are plenty of other great, if a little old, titles out there, but where are the current-gen space combat games?

I think online co-op where you can form squadrons (similar to guilds) that let you group together for missions and upgrade your ships at a customizable carrier would be really sweet, and classic missions, like a Death Star trench run, would be really cool and hectic.

So- what do you dream of in space combat or Rogue Squadron game on the current generation of console?
What do you think happened to the genre?

There is one good space combat game out there, though not in the sense you would expect. Shattered Horizon is a squad FPS combat game that takes place out in space, with zero-G and no concept of "up" or "down".

Oh I would love a good space combat sim on the current gen of consoles, Frantic online co-op and PvP would be amazing.

I never did understand why this genre of game kinda disappeared into obscurity, Titles like the Rogue Squadron series always sold well and if you Stick "Star Wars" onto the front of something your almost guaranteed a return of your investment.

Two games I truly enjoyed as a kid were Rogue Squadron and X-Wing Alliance. Interesting backstory as well.Ah yes. Those were the days.

For a while, I was excited about this space combat MMO call Black Prophecy. Then I got into the closed beta and was underwhelmed. Now I'm back to where you are: craving a good, modern, space combat game. If only Yahtzee hadn't given up on Fun Space Game: The Game...

Black Prophecy is still the best of a bad situation. Even if it isn't Freelancer it's still buckets of fun [small]at least I think so.[/small] And it's FREE!

All my characters are Genide. Char I'm using now is "Fel Keridan". Hit me up if you start playing again. [small]That is if you aren't a dastardly Tyi[/small]

I did play old rogue squadron games and liked some of it, but the conditions for getting better medals were baroque at best. I personally liked Star Wars Battlefront's flying mechanics better, and when I first saw the mission Long Night of Solace in Halo Reach I cried with joy.

Speaking of Battlefront, who currently holds the IP rights for it, and why are they not cashing in?! I don't want a crappy lookalike on the PSP, put it on the Xbox and PS3 already!

Oh, and I just know that Mass Effect can pull this off easily. I'm really hoping that Bioware implements some space combat in ME3, because if they don't, I don't know if I'll ever be able to forgive them, unless they give me a singing plush toy of Mordin Solus.

I totally agree with you. It's sad to see that the space gcombat genre has for the most part died. It's not exactly starwars but you could always get Freespace2 from Good old games.

What uhh...are you talking about??? X-wing isn't on steam...no one on the net that I know of sells any of the x-wing games. Way to get my hopes up when I read that and instantly opened up steam only to be dissapointed.

Halo reach was onto something for a mission but they took it away faster then you could enjoy it.

How you gonna explain that? Say that shepard absorbed joker and now has awesome flying abilities?

Otherwise bioware has stated they wont give you control of the normandy in any of the games.

A couple people already mentioned it, but...

[HEADING=1]Freespace 2[/HEADING]

The space-combat game so good it killed the genre(actually it was the death of the joystick... but screw it, I like this theory better!)

Seriously, this game is the best space-combat game I've ever played. Made by Volition(of Saints Row 2 fame), and is just sublime.

Its actually only $6 USD on GoG.com

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2

Updated to run on modern operating systems and there's no DRM. Also includes the awesome soundtrack.

They even link you to the mods that update the game's graphics(so you can play at modern resolutions). If anyone, anyone enjoys space-combat, you must get this game.

You could always play one of the X3 games if you have the patience of the Elder God from Legacy of Kain. Actually, X3: Terran Conflict apparently had an overall boost to its combat (i.e it was fun, easy to get into, and didn't kill you outright) whereas X3: reunion was more about building an economic strategy so you could overwhelm your space-faring enemies with lots of expensive ships and hardware.

I dunno, take a look at X3 and see if its something you would want to attempt to get into.

Sorry, I was mistaken. I misremembered.
They do have the Jedi Knight series, though.

Don't they have a little bit of flying?

I haven't gotten the new GameInformer yet so bear with me please.

Where and when was it stated that you would never fight with the Normandy, and did they rule out the possibility of any other ship?

Also keep in mind a certain special situation in ME2. It doesn't have to be Shepherd all the time.

Ya know, I've been running a server for Discovery just as long as I've been registered here. Damn global server is down though, so unless you did the right .ini edit, no one finds me.
