I thought that Darkstar One was a decent space combat game....
That it was. I wish it gave you an option to either play the story or just sandbox it up. Some of those story missions were a pain. Not many people know about Darkstar One. Those that do were turned off by some slogan one of the developers slapped onto it. It said something about being the next Freelancer, which didn't go over well with the Freelancer fans.

I would love to see a Privateer(1)/Freelancer/X3 type game. It just seems the game companies are too stuck on the fantasy/modern war theme to look up. And Eve is certainly not the ONLY space game that can ever be.

I too have tried Black Prophecy, its definately nothing special .. but as a free game, you get what you pay for.

X3: Terran Conflict, give it a try.
It is a singleplayer though, but at least it lets you build your space mega-corp, a fleet of space cruisers, and so forth :p

Its pretty much what it says on the box too :

Build, Think, Fight, and Trade.

...although the Think bit is kind of under rated and falls onto the Trade mechanics even more.

Also, people have compared it with EVE Online, but Offline if that's any indication.

ALSO! NORMANDY SR 1 AND SR2!!! (Mod packs - look for Cadius' Xtra ship pack, its labeled as the Longsword series).

So- what do you dream of in space combat or Rogue Squadron game on the current generation of console?
What do you think happened to the genre?

Another space combat game like Freelancer would get all of my money.

What happened to the genre? FPS's are more lucrative. There definitely is a group of gamers like myself who love them but it just isn't as popular. It's a shame really.

Space Combat sim based on Ender's Game.

I'd buy it in a heart-beat.
I support this idea.

I don't see why they just don't bring back the Wing Commander universe as the basis for a space combat sim, it was so good. The universe was well developed and it created some of the best games from what is now the classic era of video games.

But if you are looking for something reasonably new I know that Wing Commander: Arena was published by EA a few years back as a PvP type space sim you could download for X-box 360.

I haven't gotten the new GameInformer yet so bear with me please.

Where and when was it stated that you would never fight with the Normandy, and did they rule out the possibility of any other ship?

Also keep in mind a certain special situation in ME2. It doesn't have to be Shepherd all the time.

Going to put in another vote for DarkStar One and Freespace 2. DS 1 has a nice, big universe to mess around in, and you can do a lot of random things.

Freespace 2 is probably one of the best space sims ever made, and the FS Open project has updated graphics, good rebalancing, and a ridiculous amount of incredible user-created content. Play the Blue Planet campaigns especially - you won't be disappointed.

*sniff* Space Sims were my favourite genre. I don't know why, but somehow I blame Microsoft for the absence of current gen space games. Oh right, now I remember:
Fuck you M$, fuck you for canceling this thing. And fuck you, all of you who would rather play the yearly CoD/Halo/Gears/whatever bullshit rather than buying some of the amazing old space games to show that there is still a market for them. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna get off my soap box and play some more Freespace, followed by Freelancer, and maybe some Homeworld 2.

Nexus the Jupiter Incident was an awesome space combat sim with an awesome fleshed out story and cinematic styled battles. I highly recommend it for the singleplayer campaign as multiplayer is fun but rare.

Step one: Install Garry's Mod

Step two: Install SpaceBuild for Garry's Mod

Step three: Build a starship on a SpaceBuild server

Step four: Enjoy.

For a while, I was excited about this space combat MMO call Black Prophecy. Then I got into the closed beta and was underwhelmed. Now I'm back to where you are: craving a good, modern, space combat game. If only Yahtzee hadn't given up on Fun Space Game: The Game...
Oh, I don't want to hear that. I've been looking forward to Black Prophecy for ages! Please tell me it doesn't suck that badly.

One of the last good space sims I've played was Independence War 2. OP, if you haven't played that, it's worth playing if you can find it. It was pretty damn good back in it's day, but it is around ten years old now. It's a lot better than the X series, although they're not too bad either.
Space combat sims have been my favourite genre since Elite, and I've been missing them badly over the last decade. I don't know why developers no longer want to put a player in the seat of a space fighter, but if anyone returns to doing that I'd buy everything they make.

I don't think it's really that bad, but rather that I've just been spoiled by other, much higher quality MMOs, and so I just couldn't get into this one. They're doing beta testing right now, so sign up and try it for yourself.

We need another freelancer!
My goodness, yes! Perhaps, even a Freelancer-style Rogue Squadron game. IT should be fully immersed in the Rogue Squadron universe!
