And no one mentions Starlancer ... all I know is that I cried a little bit when Battleship Yamato came to rescue me buttz. Not to mention fighting against a capital ship, and having to destroy each critical part of it, from weapon systems, to its engine and life support was so damn fun and challenging.

FreeSpace 1/2 of course, is just a classic. Again, destroying the Lucifer-class ship for the first time was one satisfactory moment. Can't say I felt the same way in Freelancer :(

Battlefront 2 has a sweet system for space warfare, you can even board other ships. Though it is very FPS micro based combat.

Pretty simple explanation there, because no one seems to have been able to do it in a way that was fun. Space Force: Rogue Universe is fairly recent and all of the combat boiled down to charging at an enemy, shooting, pulling a 180 and going again.

Put simply, Space Sim is a very difficult genre to do right.

X2/X3 are both great, difficult to get into at first, and require a fair bit of time, but they're fantastic.
Pilot a little ship, or a 2km long destroyer with 64 guns.
You decide.
(and everything between)

Freespace 2 and X-wing/Tie Fighter live happily on my shelf.
Last space combat game I played was Freelancer, that was pretty fun multiplayer. Not great but there wasn't much competition.

It's still a WIP, but take a look...

It definetly looks interesting.
This intrigues me, do want. Also, sweet music.

Since I've started reading Star Wars: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron, I've begun to hanker for a good space combat sim.
Sure, X-Wing is on Steam, and there are plenty of other great, if a little old, titles out there, but where are the current-gen space combat games?

I think online co-op where you can form squadrons (similar to guilds) that let you group together for missions and upgrade your ships at a customizable carrier would be really sweet, and classic missions, like a Death Star trench run, would be really cool and hectic.

So- what do you dream of in space combat or Rogue Squadron game on the current generation of console?
What do you think happened to the genre?
It would be pretty cool if there was a MMO sim for Rogue Squadron.

I loved the space combat in the Battlefront 2 beta demo version, It was a teaser level I got from an old xbox game (the original, not the 360) and the controls in it were awesome, much better than the final game (which was still great) I remember getting in the nippy fighter, and flying over to the droid capital ship, and then starting at its nose, flying along the length of the ship as the ships lasercannons fired at you, using boost for extra awesomeness. There were tonnes more cannons on the ship in the demo version, but they were highly inaccurate, so you could weave in and out of their fire, and the controls were much sharper and allowed for incredibly fast banking turns and evasions. I would wait for the last second before firing a full payload into the bridge, and pull up, skimming the top of the bridge. Why did they change it?

Install either the Reunion or 88 flak mods to get a whole new expanded experience within the Freelancer world. Reunion has the larger online community (full of damn pirates!!) but 88 flak has much more balance to its ships and arms.
