My avatar is a fencer. The gray area represents a metallic jacket called a lamè that acts as part of the scoring system circuitry that helps a judge determine if a valid touch was made. That it only covers his torso indicates the fencer is a foilist (my preferred weapon) though his armed hand is held at an angle most commonly associated with epee (the neutral angle uses the weapon's guard to protect the hand and forearm which is a common target). The unarmed hand is held in the air in a classic style, which I personally don't care for. That is probably the best thing about epee - they don't care what you do with that hand but in foil you must keep it out of the way as it blocks the target area.
