I agree with you that we should get new ideas on the market, but that doesn't invalidate bringing back old (and maybe forgotten) IPs.
Think about it: in current console gen (not even talking about computers with their juiced up GPUs and whatever) we have for the first time the ability to build really convincing approximations of reality, to a point that we (veteran gamers) would not think possible without some virtual reality contraption attached to our heads (Nintendo tried it, to their credit).
HOWEVER, there are some genuinely fun things, specially regarding gameplay and FUN(!) that seems to be lacking in most current AAA releases.
In that sense, i proposed this tread, in order to stirr up our memories and attract attention, maybe from someone on the industry that holds some of these IPs, to maybe update some of them and try and distill some of the finer basic aspects of games of old.
1 - Atari games: Most of them were "infinite games", those you could never beat. Even so, some are still awesome, for their basic gameplay and fast paced fun factor;
2 - 8 and 16 bit era games: Back when we knew very little about the limitations of our consoles (and so manufacturers thought would be a good idea to enlighten us, thus bringing forth the "Bit wars") big exploration games seemed infinite in scope. Imagine what could be done today for games like Starflight, or its spiritual grandchild, Mass Effect, bringing new planets and entire galaxy sectors, with new challenges and keeping a great game forever alive ? which is the basic premise for MMOs.
3 ? The limitations those pioneer programmers had to overcome perhaps brought much of the creativity we saw back them. You talk about mech games. Good Lord, just now that we can actually render a whole city populated with AI imbued polygon people properly, and there is no decent mech game around? Why is the genre dead? I just saw my local bookstore with stacked up shelters of ?Green Lantern? for Xbox 360. If there is a place for such an abomination, certainly there is some place in XBLive for a reskinned Hero, or Final Fantasy, or even Crazy Ivan!
That?s my 2 cents.

I'm sure this has been said already but... none.
There are a lot great properties from the old days, and those games were certainly good, but current-gen gaming is stagnant enough with constant sequels and remakes and revivals of old properties. What we REALLY need is more interesting original material.
But, if we're going to be remaking stuff anyway, we should get some Mechwarrior action going on. If they remade the Titanium Trilogy, I might be okay with that. Hell, remake Earthsiege, or even fucking G-NOME for God's sake. Anything to get some current-gen mech sims on the market.
Seriously, when did we lose interest in stomping around in giant robots? But back to my original point, I'm really looking forward to that indie mech game--what's it called--Steel Hearts or something?
EDIT: I forgot Heavy Gear. Heavy Gear 2 was one of the best mech games to ever come out on the PC.
Also, that reminds me, Armored Core should have been a PC game series. That game utilizes literally every single button on the Dual Shock, and it's cumbersome as all Hell. Mouse and Keyboard control would have worked about 100x better.
