Back when I started the tabletop game it was space wolves all the way, loved thier look and the fact that they opperated almost indipendantly from the rest of the imperium, functioning as packs in a very tribal way, just loved thier backstory.

Ever since DoW2 tho I've been drawn to the tyranids mainly because the idea of them fascinates me, consuming worlds for some unknown purpose, adding the dna and resources to thier own constantly evolving, they might not be as in depth history or personality wise as the rest of the 40k universe but like I said, just fascinating to me. not to mention 40 foot aliens with blade sharp claws kick ass :p

And then of course there are the two theories, each worse than the last:

Theory 1- The three Hive Fleets that wrecked everyone's shit so far and have only been beaten back at great cost are just little tiny tendrils of a much-greater force to follow and nomnom everyone, or;

Theory 2- The sudden emergence of the Tyranids en masse means that, like wild animals in a forest fire, they are actually running away from something...

Take your pick. We're all fucked either way.

Power Armor is for sissies, real men wear flack armor and carry flashlights!

With that said, I'm for the Imperial Guard.

The Emperor Protects!

Necrons have been my favorite ever since Dark Crusade. I've only ever played the original Dawn of War video games, but just defaulted to playing Space Marines, without really caring about any race in particular before DC. After playing as the Necrons, though, I've never looked back. I can't even say exactly why I love them so much. They just fit perfectly with my preferred play style.

Either Tau or Imperial Guard. Tau because, hey, they're the closest thing this setting has to good guys (Doesn't necessarily MAKE them good guys, but still). Imperial Guard because they're both mostly sympathetic and because they have Ciaphas Cain, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!

The Imperium, specifically the Guard. Their massive balls have been mentioned, but I think it's also because on the whole they don't have any of the guile, superiority or douchiness associated with the rest of the 40K universe. They're just a bunch of blokes shooting at things because they're told to.

That and Commissars. That /uniform/. Unf. :p

I'm not exactly the biggest fan of the series but my friends have introduced me to some of the lore of it. So if I had to pick, probably the Tau.
Partly because as a young empire they have gone far, partly because their intentions are noble and partly because they are an army of many races working together.
Whatever, I know they probably wouldn't win against Chaos or Necrons but I know which side I like best.

Neither, really. You lose no matter what side you play... Especially if you consider it from the view of a soldier/general and not "invincible omniscient (besides fog of war -_-) god hovering above the battlefield"...

Now as gameplay goes, and I only have Dawn of War 1 and it's expansions to base it on, I like all races. Yeah, I'm very decisive. Eldar, Tau, orks and necrons are somewhere there close to the top of my list... And as you can see, all 4 of them have vastly different play styles.

A bunch of indoctrinated propaganda-ridden expendable slaves if you ask me =p

Although tanks do rock indeed.

Not to mention it didn't take them long to be influenced by everyone else's view of the galaxy...

I stopped playing with miniatures when I was 13, overpriced etc.

But I love the Tyranid concept, they're just so awesome!

Dark eldar are the best by far, mainly because every race in 40k has an intricate backstory and motivation whereas they just like to kill everyhting in sight because they can.

They are also the best race by far to use in the tabletop version of the game, in my opinion anyway. They are britle as dry twigs but they can pack so much firewpower, espesialy at low points and they are the fast as anything, you can be in combat on the first turn even on a full sized board with some even slightly luck rolls

Tyranids: I'd take one hive mind, please.
Orkz: short life, lots of fun. They are probably the only ones having fun there.

The Imperial Guard! Rubbish alone, slightly less rubbish in numbers, very expendable, great armour support, they have it all!
Commissars! Psykers! Crap heroes! Basilisks!
