only ones on this list I've seen are:

High School of the Dead : only watched the first episode when my friend came round, seemed quite good if a bit messed up

K-On : same as above, but not quite as messed up, will watch this through soon

Love Hina : it's good but I found it got a bit hard-going near the end, haven't bothered with the OVAs and extras as my intrest was nearly gone by the end of the main series, however, I found Negima (by the same guy) to be awesome from start to finish

Well..in the last episode of Gurren Lagann, the robots are the size of GALAXIES!!

So watch that one, it`s only 24-ish episodes long..and it`s really good imo.
Though the only one I`ve seen from the list I think

I really like Gurren Lagann, but I've heard that Clannad is pretty cool. I haven't seen High School of the Dead yet, but that looks really awesome. If you want a sure-fire good anime, go for GL. It's not the most original series, but if episode 8 doesn't make you throw your fist up in the air in glorious celebration and defiance of life's challenges while simultaneously making you sob, then I guess you have some empty space in your head for storing spare change or your cell phone or something, because you're obviously missing the emotional part of your brain.

Skip K-ON though. It's a series about normal, lolicon, highschool, bff girls who start a band and perform in the various school talent shows. That's it. There's no significant conflict, no well developed characters, no intense action scenes, no deep psychological/philosophical/spiritual challenges, no romantic interest, not even any good fan-service scenes. It's a series about hyper-cute anime girls who do hyper-cute anime things and live happily ever after. If you're a 15 year-old girl who is obsessed with ANY cartoon that comes out of Japan and consume nothing but Mtn Dew, pocky, candy, and cream soda, and don't want to have your mind challenged in any way, shape, or form, watch this series. If not, skip it.

I started watching Welcome to the NHK just because of this thread. I'm on the 4th episode right now, and I already love it. I really agree with the others here, this has got to be one of the funniest animes. Reminds me sometimes of Egoraptor, for some odd reason.

That sounds... fucking awesome

just proves how low this series is.
Oh wow... you're right. That's ridiculous. There was absolutely no reason he had to grab her chest to snipe, to get an angle shot of the bullet that conveniently provides an up-skirt view, and a slow motion boob jiggle to boot.

Excel Saga if you have a good knowledge of anime in general, because each episode is a parody of a different genre (sports, romance, action, etc...), subverting all their tropes and cliché. However, if you're relatively new to anime, maybe it's better to get more familiar with other series before watching Excel Saga, so you can get the references. Magical Street Abenobashi does this one-genre-per-episode thing, too.

K-On is the anime equivalent of watching that youtube vid of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0-Sv6YnxEc: no action or plot, just a cute thing to bring a smile.

I agree with both choices, but if I have to choose 1, then Excel Saga. It is demented and wrong on several levels and that's why I love it. Watch Cromartie next though.
Not to give any spoilers, but the last two episodes of Excel Saga = Pure genius.
Agreed.

Do not perplex yourself with choices further.
That is my favorite one by far.
