Having just read the first book in the series in under a day, (I was bed ridden with flu!) And being a massive fan of the series I was just wandering how people feel on the subject. please avoid spoilers as I am British and as a consequence am about 3/4 through series 2 and have previously stated only read the first book.

So heres my take on it, Darkly Dreaming Dexter is like deep classical music, dark and forboding, the series is as if a bunch of expert jazz musicians get there hands on it and busk around a theme creating something interesting and new.

The show, it has better pacing and it's less um... indulgant. Dexter is, oddly, more likeable in the show because the author thinks FAR too highly of the character.

Im sorry to say that I haven't read the books... But I am planing on getting the first one...
But I do know that the books and the TV series takes a rather big step from each other in the second season witch also makes me believe the TV series is better...
In the books they throw in some voodoo spirit
Dexter is possessed by the voodoo spirit and that's why he kills
EDIT: Corrected the spoilers a bit...

Actually, I didn't like the show. It has too much CSI and not enough serial killer stuff going on. Does the book suffer from this issue as well?

Addittionally, Dexter doesn't truly share sociopathic behavior or demonstrate a rational detachement from morality. Constantly having an internal monologue saying how much of a psychopath you could be doesn't necessarily make you one.

His connection with the opposing serial killers is treated more like a mystical contrivance where he knows what they are thinking or about to do, simply because he is "one of them" though he doesn't act like any of them.

I really wish they would have delved into how he is literally like them and the specific reasoning as to why he can guess the moves of the opposing killers.
