Some bands that broke up a long time ago have managed to remain to be a huge influence on out culture (the beatles etc). which bands to you think will have a long lasting impact on our culture as we know it long after they have been and gone?
IMO i think:
radiohead
oasis
i leave it down to you guys :)
EDIT: i mean all newer bands bands (90s onwards) that are still together or have recently broken up.

Everybody now: THE BEATLES!

Edit: Okay, I guess I didn't really read the original post and made a fool out of myself with this reply. So I'll change it to Deerhoof and the White Stripes.

Already timeless bands don't count. I nominate Pearl Jam. What are people's thoughts on the staying power of the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Arcade Fire influencing culture long after they've gone? That made me LOL hard. Same with Oasis, although they're more prominent.

Radiohead has had enough impact on Snobland to be referenced until the end of times.

But, yeah, the usual suspects. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Doors, U2, Nirvana, Micheal Jackson, Elvis Presley those bands everyone knows.

-edit-

Lame answer to the actual question: None.

Because popular music has become too fleeting, and music in general too diverse to spawn one of those MASSIVELY POPULAR AWESOME acts.

Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga might be popular, but they're not popular enough (the latter might be excluded) with most of the snobs and pundits to get into the Timeless Zone.

Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Tchaikovsky... They all beg to differ.

I get where you were going with the statement, but to have something actively affecting culture for 300+ years is pretty significant, considering the vast societal gaps between now and then.

Not saying that Gaga will become timeless. But she's A) popular and B) managed to make quite an amount of music pundits wet their panties before she became popular, which is a better position to become timeless from than being loved by tweens, but hated by everyone else.

If there's one band which I think is already timeless, it's Massive Attack. They've pretty much created a genre and influenced so many other acts. Also, they've spawned some of the best songs in history, so yeah.

Red Hot Chili Peppers is a safe bet, too. But that's mostly because they're remnants from a 'simpler time'. BLOODSUGARSEXMAGIK is legendary, Californication is absolutely great. The rest is quite... well, shit. Still, they managed to make an impact.

Muse, in my eyes, gave in to their own hype. The Resistance is, compared to Absolution and Origin of Symmetry, shite as well.

Wait, you know which band should be timeless? Truckfighters. They've got the groove of Kyuss, and rock harder.

Case in point: 'Desert Cruiser' [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLMPA4xPFpg] and the official video for...

If Muse don't become timeless - in Britain at least - I'd be very very surprised.

Some of Green Day's earlier stuff is overplayed enough to give me hope that they will continue forever.

Of the bands I listen to regularly...hahaaaa except the above never going to happen.
