Pick what the team needs.
Don't just pick one class, depending on the situation switch between them.

Soldier and Heavy are great newbie classes if you're just getting started. Avoid spy and demo like the plague if you're just starting, they're pretty difficult.

Go medic, assuming the team is bigger than 8 people you can almost always do with more medics.

You can also join this group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC] and ask if you have any problems/questions with anything. We have at least one person in there who is good at each class, and when questions are asked you get responses very quickly from a few different people.

Medic (gives you that walm and fuzzy feeling of helping others) and Spy (because I'm a *****)

Medic lets you GREATLY help your team, helps you to learn the maps, and lets you observe how to play the other classes and little tricks. I personally love medic; it is easy to get into, but very difficult to master.

Few tips: Don't just heal one person, spread the love. In the options for the game, you can turn on certain things to help you (such as auto-medic call out (if a friendly is below X% health, it will alert you), arrow over who is getting healed, and 1 click healing as opposed to holding it)

Heavy is also pretty good for starting, just keep track of your health and no when to back out. You are much better alive than dead (goes for all classes)

Notes: sometimes it is alright to sacrifice yourself for the greater good. The best example is if you take out the enemy medic even if you know you will die. I do it all the time and it can hold off an offensive strike indefinitely if done often enough.

Go for something straighforward to start off with. Soldier, Heavy, Medic, pretty much anything where you can do ok just by aiming in the right direction. Observe the other classes for a while and give them a shot when you feel you know enough.

Good Dazz! *hands over cookie*

Seriously though, come over. We're a decent enough bunch of people, no-one's gonna wail on you for being a beginner, we were all there once.

Try out all the classes, first offline and then online and see which ones you find the most fun

I'd suggest... Well any class really.
Pyro is pretty fun, but you have to get the nuances down. The same is true for all characters really.
Pyro and Heavy are the pick up and play ones though so I'd say go with them.
Then move on to the explosive classes: Demoman, Soldier and Engie (Cos of lvl3 sentry)
then go on to "weaker" classes: Scout, Sniper, Spy and Medic

It depends on what best suits the current game, and which class you have the most fun playing. I say try them all and see.

Soldier is a good starter class, it's well rounded and not too difficult to pick up.
Heavy is also good, as long as you realize that extra health doesn't make you invincible.
Medic is tricky, because though it's a fairly easy class to play, he's also an important class, and you might have people get mad at you if you do poorly.

My advice would be to look for a server that says "newbies only" or something similar. TF2 has been out for almost 3 years now, which is enough time for some people to have gotten brutally good at the game.

Scout, practice work at it and when you do become a good scout you can do all sortsa crazy awesome stuff.Once you learn to aim at scout running speed you learn to aim good as anyone else.

Pyro and shoot the shit out of your teammates with your flamethrower while psychotically shouting "spycheck".
Or you could just play a spy yourself and induce that kind of paranoia on the other team...

...if you are good enough. I'm not. I do the former.
