'Shadow Over Innsmouth' is my personal favourite story, I recommend that one first.

I adore Lovecraft, but some of his stories are a massive yawn (hey, you can't win them all).

EDIT: Yep, he was incredibly racist, sexist and a complete shut-in, but hey, the creator of James Bond and my grandfather were two for three! Really, if you're plumbing the depths of the Necronomicon for morality then you're doing something wrong.

As was said above, almost everything (including all of Cthulhu) is in public domain. If you have an ereader (or smartphone / tablet) there is a free ebook called Complete Lovecraft Reader with all of the public domain stories that was assembled and edited by fans. You can probably find it pretty easily (or if someone knows a place to store it I can upload it myself).
Ooh, thanks for that.
http://preview.tinyurl.com/3e8nptg should link you to it in my Dropbox with a preview (it is made public). I don't know if they cap traffic on a box or not (hopefully the Escapist's traffic doesn't murder my account) but I can at least leave it up for awhile.

No need, I got it from somewhere else.

Note: that's the download page, not the website I got it from.

Since no one else has, I'm going to recommend The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. And yeah, most (if not all) of Lovecraft's work is online already.

And yes, Lovecraft was racist even by the standards of his time (not to mention paranoid and otherwise messed-up). It's up to you whether or not that sours you on his work.

If he's on a tight budget, then he will probably have difficulty buying an e-book reader.

I was told to start off in the Dream Cycle before advancing into the Mythos - they introduce the sort of unique style and universe. But everyone has their own way of getting into Lovecraft I suppose.

Edit: Diving right in isn't a bad idea either. Once you're comfortable with the author, it isn't difficult to move around and enjoy the stories at your own pace :)
