Balrogs are actually in the same order as Gandalf (who is a Maia, same order as the Valar, but lesser in power.)

Half elf half human, so you get to be more or less human, but have some of the skills and the long-life spans of elves.
If i had to pick a more "mainstream" race, probably dwarfs. It's just that i've always viewed elves as stuck up and arrogant in their own apparant perfection...dwarfs like eating, drinking and mining for gems, and i find them much easier to relate too because of their imperfections.
