Quake.

You could play other types of FPS games and pick up another one and do alright but drop someone from CS or CoD into Quake and they will get annihilated.

The twitch based aiming that FPSs "grew up" on is the sort of aiming that takes skill. Not this auto aim spray and pray bollocks.
Being able to strafejump around a map whilst hitting targets and taking in where everyone is you have skill.
^ This.

Twitch is pretty much gone in FPSs these days so that people who use gamepads can play.

Anyone who was semi-decent at Quake can pick up any modern FPS and dominate because of the ludicrously slow pace and lack of precision aiming.

Call of Duty 1, rifle only match, no M1 Garand because there will always be that one spraying retard.
Now you got one shot before the enemy notices you, if you can't aim it's all over, and when you beat everyone in a 5 vs 1 standoff... hohoho do you bollocks grow :D

CS also takes quite a bit of skill, but there it's alot more about tactics, standing with a pistol in the right position is far superior then being in the wrong position with a machinegun.

I equate tactics with skill, which is why CoD takes none.

The ones where you had to MOVE to dodge bullets while SHOOTING the other person who also MOVING... you talk about skillz... shit. Used to go 100 Kills to 4 Deaths in an 8 on 8 FEAR TDM inside of 10 min. You just can't do shit like that in games like CoD, the game's mechanics physically do everything they can to stop you.

In fact, the games now are purposefully designed to limit the damage you can do as an individual to ensure everyone gets kills, everyone has fun, and everyone keeps coming back as a customer.

FPS gaming didn't used to be a house hold name. It used to be a competitive arena for geek athletes and the general public walked away frustrated or crying from games these people haunted.

right about now it's looking like killzone 3 will fit in nicely with unreal and CS:S as my top 3 most demanding shooters.

Well that is quite a limited view, killing people also takes skill.
In the old CoD anyway, now you just spray while the aim-bots do their thing, or do a 30foot knife stab leap.

The ones that stick out most in my mind are counter strike, call of duty online, and team fortress 2. pretty much any error at all in those games and you were dead. team fortress 2 is a little more forgiving depending on your class and if you have a medic, of course..

EDIT: OH MY GOD UNREAL TOURNAMENT. I forgot about that game.

it depends, you need a certain level of skill to play online properly (ie having a good time) and more so to succeed. i can play one round of halo, get a kill/death of 12, suck for the next 50 games and then get really good games for the next 50.

its all who you play with, if their skilled they will try to use their knowledge of the map but the newbies are far more random.

Umm... I've noticed how COD players SUCK when they try to play Bad Company 2...
They also suck at Medal of Honor. Maybe it's a DICE game thing? But they usually aren't good at Halo either. Hmmmm....
probably because in medal of honor it is a similar game with a different style of play still the same controls oh and halo is completely different because you can only look down the sights of guns with scopes and pistols, or that throwing grenades is just right click (yes im a pc gamer)not the usual f or q or even e sometimes

In a sense all multi-player FPS should take some amount of video game skill, with the gap between versions being equivilent to fighting games where ones just a button masher and the other requires real precision.

If you're talking about actual 'skill', like playing at war outside of a video game... maybe take away the controllers hand them a paintball gun and send them out to the bush, then the old Rainbow Six players would clean house. Maybe SWAT as well, I've never played that.

It's simple, anything with one shot kill sniper rifles, bunnyhopping, dual wield, heavy vehicles, bombers, rocket launchers, forced choke points, oh and the knife not killing on impact, is a really crappy game. Not saying they take no skill, but they sure as hell aren't worth playing.

I think I just narrowed it down to...nothing. Some day a half way decent FPS will come out but as long as we keep buying, the shovelware will keep spewing.

TF2 definitely is the one that takes teamwork and know-how. (Except for the f***ing pyros)

BC2 maybe.
Only W+M1 Pyros. Normal Pyros are fine and know what they're doing.
And I'm gonna pull the biggie with DooM. Thy Flesh Consumed is one of the hardest things I've ever played, up with Jumper and Dim. Super Meat Boy is pale in comparison to those three.
