In all video games there has been a good question about what had the greatest affect on it genres, many good arguments can come from this. Golden Eye for fps, Diablo for rpgs, Tecmobowl for Sports. But which game had the greatest overall long term impact for its retrospective genre?

Starcraft (based on hype, although I've never tried it myself) or CoH for RTS imo.

Wouldn't this topic belong in gaming discussion instead of off-topic discussion? Ah, whatever...

In bullet form:
*2D Platforming = Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night
*3D Platforming = Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie
*Console FPS = GoldenEye
*Survival Horror = Resident Evil 2
*Music/Rhythm games = Frequency, Amplitude (Discounting peripherals, of course)
*Arcade Style Racing = Burnout 3

World of Warcraft has influenced the production of most major MMO's in the last couple of years.

Most FPS's in the last five years have taken many cues from Halo.

For the FPS, that would be the Halo series... for better or for worse, it still affected the entire genre

OK for the rpg stance I actually believe DnD did the most for the genre myself despite it being a book and dice game.

That's weird, When I saw this thread on the forum, I instantly thought Diablo for rpgs. So, there you have it. I think that Diablo revolutionized rpgs and Diablo II revolutionized both the genre and the series. The influences on storytelling, characters, openness and gameplay can be seen all across the rpg genre. And I also agree with Halo for fps.

Final Fantasy 7 for JRPGS.... Even though I greatly dislike that game, it was a giant turning point for the genre. Greatly popularizing it for better of for worse.

You bring a very good point into the thread. "Affecting a genre", like you pointed out, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing.

GTA for TPS, and I'm gonna say Halo 2, and NOT Halo 3 which failed in comparison to its predessesor, and definatly WoW for MMO's. Starcraft for RTS cause it was a great game and started the term "zerging".

Seriously, does no one know that Doom is just Wolfenstein 3D with demons instead of Nazis?

Doom added online multiplayer to the genre, enough said.

No it didn't. It added multiplayer. I have no idea which was the first FPS to have online multiplayer although for some reason I'm thinking Quake (you know the last id's three series)

Base in PRE-existing genres_

*Mario for platformers.
*Metal Gear Solid for tactical espionage action.
*Devil May Cry(I hate the damn thing) for 3D action games.
*Street Fighter II for 2D fighting games.
*Virtua Fighter for 3D fighting games.
*Dragon Quest(famicom) for wapanese rpgs.
*Final Fantasy VII for wapanese 3D rpgs.

I'll prob. think of more, I have to hurry and take a dump. Later.
