Which game do you think comes close to being perfect?

System Shock 2's already been mentioned, but it also gets a vote from me.

Also, one that hasn't been mentioned yet...Shadow of the Colossus. Simple, flowing, stunningly beautiful, incredibly evocative, and lest we forget pretty damn fun too.

That said, I want to emphasize the near part of near-perfect. I've never played a game that I flat-out worshiped, and I doubt I ever will. Games can be excellent, fantastic even, but perfection? No.

Though not necessarily my favorite game, I think Half-Life 2 comes as close to perfection as anything I've played. What sets it apart for me is that all of the game's elements are so well-executed that, speaking with almost no game-making experience, the game seems so "well-crafted."

My one gripe is that the return to city 17 missions (Anticitizen One, cant remember the others) drag on a bit.

Gothic 2 is far from perfect but it has that little something that makes it my favorite game ever so Im gonna say Baldurs Gate 2, only 2 flaws which have I noticed are lack of open world which would suit to this kind of game and being somethimes little too slow paced.

Portal, it offered a different perspective on "First person shooters" and didn't disappoint with the new take on them.

Morrowind, for having so much to do, and feeling so engaging.
Pretty much got my answer. Morrowind is one of those games that I played sooooo many times and yet finished it only once. That's why it's only CLOSE to perfection.

There is so much stuff to do (guilds, dungeons, jerking around and mod dungeons) that eventually (as I usually do) you completely forget about the main plot. I don't know how that thing could be fixed. But if it somehow WAS fixed. Than it would be a perfect game.

PS. Also Fallout 2 is near perfect.

The closest game I've seen to being perfect is Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. It has it all: fantastic story, incredibly likable characters, an engaging and challenging battle system and some of the most creative dungeon and monster designs ever.

Majora's mask - if it wasn't for the time system.

Ocarina of Time - if it wasn't for the fact after beating the boss it just reverted to before beating the boss, if it allowed the player to run around in a now perfect world and have one last chat with the npcs, this game would really have been literally perfect.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't completed either of them yet... A side effect of using an N64 emulator, with the inherently wonky control porting...

OT: Pokemon Soul Silver. Other than 'there are too many pokemon, and everything after generation 2 looks stupid', come up with a flaw. It even lets you drag and drop pokemon in your pc! (something I complained about bitterly in diamond/pearl). OK, the lack of storyline might be a little bit of a problem. It also seems to be the pokemon game with the least level grind in it - you can just play through, and usually be just about powerful enough to make battles challenging, but doable.

'You have to burn the rope' - An amusing little innovative flash game, with an epic final boss fight - google it!

Damn, beat me to it! MGS is without a doubt the best PS1 game I've ever played. For me, it's only beaten by it's prequel, on the PS2, (MGS3.)

Super Metroid. I can't think of anything bad that can be said about it.

And the theme song used to give me chills.

Can I just be the only one who says Pikmin 2, have my post sink into obscurity, and then forget about this thread? Yes?

Pikmin 2, for me.

To consider a game to be close to perfect, i think it should be something that anyone can easily pick up and play, but only the truly skilled can master (much like a musical instrument).
It should make you want to come back to it, and play it again.
It should challenge the player, without too steep a learning curve.
It should be relatively free of glitches or bugs, and most important of all,
It should never stop being fun.

Some examples:

Tetris
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Metroid
Portal
