Pikmin 2, for me.

"Oho, I see you've paid off your house. Naturally, this would mean you want something bigger, hmm? Don't worry, I'll have a second floor added to your house by tomorrow."

...

"Factoring in the cost of raccoon labor, the union strike, building materials, and fortifying the supports, your new house will run you 500,000 Bells."
It's still the best game i've ever played
City Folk was a bit of a letdown, though...

Slaves to Armok: God of Blood: Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress. Yes, that's the full title. The game is still considered to be in alpha, but it already surpasses anything i've seen in terms of emergent gameplay, emergent narrative and even emergent graphics. To me, gaming, being the interactive medium it is, should be all about emergence. If i wanted something wholly predetermined, i'd go read a book.

As for finished games - AI War - a distillation of Grand 2D space strategy to its as of yet purest form. An AI that adapts to your advances, game rules that punish you for overextension, no symmetry and great replayability.

Hrrm.

Star Control II
Master of Magic
MOO2
Alpha Centauri+SMAX
Starflight 1&2
Dune 2

I like Sword of the Stars a lot, but there are just enough holes that I can't include it in the above list.

With a little more thought: Wing Commander: Privateer, and actually virtually everything ever put out by Origin before it got bought by EA

My definition of a 'perfect' game is one that even after x years I can go back to and play through again to completion despite having played it a million times already and still not being bored of it and therefore the list is as such:

Tetris
Freecell
Metal Gear Solid 1
LoZ: Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask
FFVI and VII - Controversial choices I'm sure but I consider these chill out games as I don't have to be paying attention and can still go through it without much worry

Little Big Adventure.

Seriously I keep feeling like a broken record when I say this. The controls aren't perfect and the english voice acting is atrocious, but aside from that, everything about it is good, it's efficent, it'll run on fucking anything, it looks good, it's quirky, it's difficult, it's entertaining and it's full of memorable, stand-out characters.
a million times! I think it's 99% nostalgia but these games WERE my childhood so I'll always have a soft spot for both of these games. Both of these sit proudly on my bookshelf at University and will both probably be played after I have finished my final exams and subsequent drinking as a celebration.

Damn, as if I wasn't looking forward to post-next-Wednesday enough...

I have to say that Morrowind was far from perfect when it shipped, but with the stability patches, fixed content patches, and graphical update patches from the community, it is damn close.

Also: Homeworld & Cataclysm.

Homeworld felt more epic, and was the original, but Cataclysm had better ships (By far, IMO) and felt more Menacing.

Age of Empires 2: The Conquerors expansion did pretty much everything right in my opinion.

As a series, Ratchet & Clank is definitely near the edge of perfection, as well.

Portal is probably the highest quality game I know of that has pretty much no flaws.

Also not to jump on the bandwagon again, but Ocarina of Time is a very massive game with almost no flaws, I can't think of any off the top of my head.

The only perfect game I can think of is if OoT and MM were merged into an updated (Graphically and gameplay-y (Wii controls), also maybe add some more side quests) game. THAT would be the perfect game...

Okami. Only fault in the entire game was that it offered little challenge. Everything else is near perfect.
this is pretty true.
although i managed to get a game over at the beginning of the game.

okami was actually the first thing that came up in me but i think prince of persia:the sands of time comes a little bit closer to perfection.
but the definite winner must be Disgaea (any game i suppose, haven't played 2 or 3 yet).
i don't need any other game if i have a disgaea game. i bet i would enjoy it for 1000's of hours, even if i don't play multiplayer.

no it isn't .____.
the controls are annoying, there are some cool characters(Captain Qwark, Courtney Gears) but most are uninteresting and i don't remember any enemies anymore (except some slimeish monsters in R&C3 where you got to collect the sewer crystals, i spent a lot of time there. that place reminded me of oldskool FPS's). the weapon designs are awesome though, some environments were really nice and it has good music sometimes.
there's also nothing new or really original in it. not that that is needed to be a perfect game, but it does make the player more interested in the game and makes you more forgiving wih the minor flaws.
it's made by very talented people and i have a lot of respect for them, but the game doesn't come close to perfection.

Bethesda and Bioware make games that I love but they are far from perfect. ME2 with resource mining and Fallout 3 was too easy even on very hard. Some problems have been remedied and others will be addressed in the future but thats part and parcel of games and any form of media. Nothing can please everyone.
