Blacklight tango down, rainbow six veags 2(can't speak for the rest of the series, but vegas 2 was great), fallout 3 often requires a certain deal of tactics, and battlefield bad company 2.

Sins of a Solar Empire, without a doubt.
I don't mean to berate on SoaSE, but all I really end up doing is forming large attack groups and the occasional defense group. Not really tactical, just a matter of outnumbering your opponent. Good game, but still...
It's a completely different game online, against other people. If I were going to talk about games that are tactical offline, I'm not sure I could name *any*...

Sat here for ten minutes trying to think of a game which is tactically challenging offline. I guess modded Nexus: TJI and... and... I don't know really. Not many.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1.

Wow there hear me out.

When I think of tactics, I think of having more than one way to do something. In most of Sonic's level design there were always multiple means to an end. It was up to your choice and your play style.

Most shooters and massive multiplayer games have sort of these 'you could do this' option, but there's always an optimal way to do it and if you don't do it that way~ well you're kicked and someone who will shall take your place.

Not in Sonic. It was just you, a blue hedgehog, and some pretty gnarly pixels.
You make a point. But that does not make it strategy, that makes it a valid multi-choice.

Strategy is when you actually have to think your actions before you perform them, in the case of video games if you do not, you get your brains blown off, or your city falls.

Got ninja'ed here

Yes, ARMA II is pretty much my choice when it comes to tactical games.

Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising - It should be a bit harder, but its the closest ive seen to acute realism in a shooter. Now if the enemies knew how to point and shoot without dislocating their elbows and hitting the tree behind you :)

In all seriousness, it forces you to think and be careful.
I take that you have it on console?

On PC, this game is just terrible IMO. But I do have the console version and that is...playable. If we would get split-screen on it, it would be much better

Every game requires the use of tactics. I assume you are talking about military tactics ? e.i. realistic war game.

Arma2 is the only option here.

Quake 3.

Seriously. You aren't going to win duels against experienced players by legging it to the rocket launcher (something I learnt the hard way). Item and weapon timing, map knowledge and a degree of stealth are just as important as awesome reflexes.

/has not played Quake 3 for a while

Even if you dislike it, this is more in regard to tactics and difficulty. Or Multiplayer (Im not contradicting you, only pointing out the relevance to the topic)

I made a little list for you:
1. Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis
2. ArmA ACE mod
3. ArmA 2 ACE mod
4. Infiltration
5. Any Rainbow Six up to and including Raven Shield
6. All Ghost Recons before they moved to third person.
Raven Shield was by far the best Tom Clancy game I've played.

Homeworld 2:

Rome Total War:

Any kind of direct charge against an experienced opponent and you'll get annihilated.
I also love that it's more timing based than rock-paper-sizor.
The morale system's great.
no, no its not XD the morale system is probably the worst thing in the game. its a little extreme so to say as whole armies can route with a simple cavalry charge.. my friend once destroyed me and my other friends entire armies simply by spamming Egyptian archers with fire arrows! (I was Samaritan so ideal for closing the gap and killing archers)

its a great game though, but i think medieval 2 is tactically better better yet rome total realism

i also agree about homeworld 2, that 3th dimension is very hard and i was horrible at it XD

Arma 2, brilliantly tactical game
this you do not use squad tactics and plan out your assault you will die a quick and horrible death so fast you wont even see it coming. and even if you do plan it out that is no sure guarantee of success.

First four Splinter Cells (I disliked Pandora Tommorow for other reasons but it still had good gameplay) and Assassins Creed 1.

Those are all great action games. For me, the tactical strategy games are even more compelling. Silent Storm and X-COM UFO Defense are two of my favorites.
I still can't believe there hasn't been a modern X-Com game that was as good as UFO Defense. We had that ufo afterlight game. It was LIKE X-COM but it just WASN'T X-COM somehow. I still enjoyed it, but I'd still rather play UFO Defense than Afterlight.
