Yea, Alyx is pretty self explanatory but she isn't the protagonist, which is why she hasn't been posted a million times already on this thread.

Also, I haven't yet, so I have to make it a point to play Beyond Good and Evil. Heard it was good.

Not really the main character, but Kreia from Star Wars: KoTOR II was a really cool female character. First of all, she was old and her entire body (besides half of her face) was covered in a cloak, so even if you are attracted to old women, you're not going to see much action from her. Second, her backstory (albeit limited by the technical issues associated with the game) was very complex. It was so that, when I first played the game, ignoring my companion's whining and crying for attention, I blasted through it so quickly that I really felt like I went gallivanting around the galaxy for no reason. As soon as you pay attention to what Kreia has to say (what I did the second time around), many parts of the game start to click in your head. Third, the reasons behind her actions were perfectly valid (if you paid attention to what those reasons are), a trait that, sadly, many heroes/villains lack besides the whole cliched "is good because he opposes the bad guy" or "is bad because he want power" crap. And she was consistent. Many times, the "wise old guy" character in a game will yak and yak about philosophical gibberish just to give the impression of age and wisdom, even if it doesn't correspond to previous philosophical dialogue. Kreia's words of wisdom hardly ever oppose each other; it always follows a singular, underlying theme (which I would divulge further were it not for the handful of gamers reading this who didn't play the game... those sad, sad gamers).

....now I wanna play KoTOR II....Holy cow, I wrote all that?
Yeah, although KotOR was much better than KotOR II was by no means bad, as many would claim.
A lot of people says KotOR II was too rushed and didn't have a good enough story or characters, I beg to differ. While it may not live up to the expectations of the masterpiece that is the original KotOR, it's still a great game.

[/short rant] over

Yeah, plus, KotOR II had many improvements to the inventory system, making it easier to use, and more animations for attacks, sure, their little things, but its the little things that count.

Plus it was really fun making all my guys Jedi, or Sith, whatever I wanted.

If the game had more time in developement, it could have been as good, if not better than KotOR I

On top of the debate on KoTOR II, I just found that GameSpy called the Kreia character the "Best Character" of 2005.

I'd say Samus because of how much she is willing to get into a mess. She doesn't whine or cry when the going gets tough. She just fires a few missiles into the face of whatever the danger. It was a good change of pace from the standard male protagonist back in the 80's. And when she's in zero suit... Damn.

Because you can opt to not be a big-titted, barely-dressed, empty-headed 20-something.
:(. No love for the shallow beautiful types.

It's a sad world we live in.

Joanna Dark would be my pic for best female character. Elvis being the best pick for alien co-star.

Samus Aran - well, with the zero suit samus sex appeal for kids front, maybe not
Chell
Fable 2
Oblivion
Fallout 3
and any other game that lets you choose your actions, because that's as moral as it gets

as long as you're not a perv and it doesn't turn into taking all your clothes off and running nekkid through town...

yeah, good times.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, should games where you get to build your own character really count? I mean, obviously you're going to like the main characters from Mass Effect and Fallout... you MADE them.

But yeah, anyway, I'll chime in with the Metroid fans. Samus tolerates no bullshit.

I've been meaning to give BG&E a try, too.

What do you mean, beautiful? That stereotype is hideous.
Leathery skin, bleached hair, fake breasts? No thanks. I'd rather slit my own eyeballs open.

EDIT: Whoops, I am being biased again...
Oh noes its almost like I was making a joke and you just made yourself look stupid.

Shame too, you are usually better than that.

Eh...this FF game having the best lead female? Uh...no. Samus easily is better, and the game is not out yet so you have little to go on. Simply being a FF game does not put the character above others. That girl from FFX-2 certainly was annoying, and SHE was a female FF lead character. I am pro-samus on this, but I am very much anti-any FF character especcially ones that are not even out yet.
Um, how is Samus better? She has no personality. Cause she's a mute Nintendo hero like Mario and Link before her. If you're pointing out Yuna though, I will agree Yuna was a crappy lead in a crappy game.
A bit late of a response but still. My point is Samus is better than any lead FF girl easily. I mostly wanted to shoot down that idea that FF makes a lead girl the best more than prove Samus as lead.
You don't even make a point. And you use one of, if not the worst lead characters in FF as your comparison. Samus has no personality at all. Terra has all the convictions and foibles that make a character lasting and memorable. What does Samus do that makes her memorable besides the obvious spoiler bits? All she really does is respond to your button commands!
You are trying to pull me into an arguement I have no interest in. My POINT is that there are easily many better leads than any female FF lead. I do not see why you are so adamant about debating Samus with me.

Why make the point in the first place if you aren't going to explain when someone calls you on it?
Thats not my point, stop making my point be something else that you want it to be. Your imaginary point is not in mine.

The Longest Journey. No-one else comes close to April Ryan. Its difficult to make a teenage girl character who can universally be sympathised with and this was done admirably in this game.
You just came into this thread and took the words right out of my mouth. April Ryan is possibly one of my favorite and generally well-written characters of all time, not just counting game characters or females.
