Those reload animations were bad simply because they had two clips banded together and instead of flipping it over and sticking the other one in he tosses the whole thing and grabs an entirely new one. What a waste.

Sure, the active reload in Gears is a cool concept, but I declare it nullified due to the fact that it's a mediocre game.

For the absolute most evil reloading around, that point goes to STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, especially whilst playing a mod. Try surviving a 30-man enemy assault when your gun jams every five seconds.
I wouldn't say it's nullified because the game is mediocre, but IMO should be "nullified" because of how they decided to put a damage bonus in it. It made no sense to me. They didn't execute that well either, it's like, the boomshot wouldn't have splash damage unless it was an active reload. The Sniper rifle couldn't pierce armor or even just a regular ol' locust's skull unless it was an active reload.

...reload "system?" How is reloading in that video different from any other game? The animations are all right, I guess, but not really different from any other game. I guess I'm not seeing whatever it is you're trying to show us.

EDIT: I'm going to agree with Iron Ninja, I like games that actually make you conserve ammo and make it so that you discard the bullets left in your magazine when you reload.
I think he means the coolest looking reload animation...

gears for sure. it isn't just pushing a button. you can sit back and wait for a reload, it pay attention and reload faster or get weapon boosts. but you can also fuck up. its very balanced and completely in the hands of the player

I like CoD4s just because I like the sounds that follow with it, I want to put in a vote for worst, which for me is Bioshock, constantly switching ammo when a big daddy is on your ass is a quick way to- well, go back 5 metres to the nearest vita chamber, but still its annoying

simple - goes down, you hear a click, comes back up loaded. That's all you need.

That's -all- you need.
You can reload while duel-wielding shotguns in that game...it was so badass

Black, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Far Cry 2. The animations had quite the 'oomf' and really immersed you into the game.

Has to be Gears of War - With the whole active reload system. I really don't see your point about Killzone 2, how is its reloading system different to say, COD 4's?

I remember back when Perfect Dark came out and there actually was an animation for reloading as opposed to a Goldeneye-esque lowering off screen and back up. For some stupid reason that sold the game to me (as I was watching a friend's version at the time) and I bought it soon after.

Another honorable mention is Mafia, that didn't do the whole 'magazines magically refill from your 213 bullets that are left', you had x number of pistol magazines at a time (or other weapon). This added an element of strategy to it because you didn't always reload after every fight because you could waste bullets (the magazine was thrown to the floor and was irrecoverable).
