So, listen up. I have one online-game, the third-person shooter War for Cybertron. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If not for stability issues, it would be perfect.
I have limited online experience beyond that. Keeping it in mind, what game would you suggest for me, that has a really good online multiplayer? And don't say Modern Warfare 2 or any other gritty FPS.
Thanks!

Battlefield 1942. Best non-gritty run and gun action with the best balanced land, sea, undersea and air vehicles in the business, set across a large number of maps in just about every kind of environment imaginable. Up to 64 players at a time, but still fun with fewer players, and one of those rare games that can be fun just to muck around in the levels with friends rather than being forced to fight all the time to have any fun. Also has bots.

I've played my fair share of all kinds of online games, and this is the only one I go back to (aside from Left 4 Dead) while my copy of Bad Company 2 (which most definitely is a 'gritty' FPS) gathers dust on the shelf.

Oooh. Do people still play it?

Also, it's for the PS3, right?

Mostly in America, but servers still around all over, I'm always on an Aussie one. It predates the PS3 and isn't on any consoles. The closest thing to it on PS3 would be warhawk, and since you seem to have an interest in 3rd person shooters I'd recommend that too.

I'm not sure...

But, if what I played at PAX was any indication, the best online play in the future will be Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. That shit be fun times for REAL.

Ah. A bit of a problem, since my PC is ancient, I have close to zero money, and there aren't any giant rats I can kill for more. I'm stuck to the PS3, I'm afraid.

How ancient though? the good thing about it being an older game is it will run well on older computers, the textures etc can be turned well down, too.

It can barely do Age of Empires 2.

Also, sonofzoltan, only PS3.

Christ, that is old...

Battlefield 1942 is a good one though, as is Battlefield 2, Team Fortress 2...hell, there are just a lot of really top-notch multiplayer games on PC. Unreal Tournament 2004 is another great one, and Serious Sam...I could go on.

I plan to get the Orange Box for the PS3, if I can find it anywhere.

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
amazing multiplayer, allowed you to mod character models to make your own personal jedi, and the multiplayer system it used was incredible.

too bad it is completely unused these days.

Hmm....

I have three games:
Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis(Capture The Island is one of the best online gamemodes ever)
ArmA II(Domination is THE BEST Co-Op gamemode ever)
EVE Online(Best MMO ever)

But if I would have to choose........ Dammit, I can't!
Those three games have the best multiplayer ever for me.

From what I've heard, the Orange Box for PS3 is a very poor port. Slowdowns, bugs, and a weakly supported TF2 (a game known best for it's free support). The porting was handled by an EA studio, so apparently there's additional walls for Valve to update it (that and they're just learning how to code for it recently). Saying stick with PC may not be helpful, but t really is the only proper version.

On the recommended side, Unreal Tournament 3 has mods and mouse support, so it could be a winner for you. There are a ton of online games for the PS3, so you may have to be more specific. Uncharted 2 and Resistance are some big exclusive TPS, shouldn't hurt to try those.

MW2 was crap.....but Call Of Duty:World at War was the stuff, dawg. That was a fun skill based game. COD:Black Ops (Made by the same dev) is looking great too!

Besides that I used to be Hardcore into Team Fortress 2. I played the Spy. I could also kick some ass as Engie or Sniper If I needed to though. I wasn't too bad as a Heavy or Scout either. Anyways that's a great game, I still play it from time to time.

Currently I've been playing Monday Night Combat - a very well balanced Class based Third Person Shooter, great game.

Since you said you only have a PS3 I say get COD:Black Ops and The Orange Box/TF2 (Although The PC version of TF2 is highly superior to the console verson. The PC version just get's more updates and support. Also better servers.)

No, you're thinking of battlefield 1943- which takes 1942, throws away all but four of the maps, all but four of the vehicles, and only a handful of weapons, and replaces the foot controls with the mess from bad company 2. Completely different game.

By the way I'd second the recommendation for UT2004, though that's PC as well. Like I said though, do a bit of research on Warhawk, a PS3 exclusive that might be right up your alley.

Monday Night Combat. Great fun and not like anything you've played before.

Or Halo. That doesnt count as "gritty" does it?

EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't see the "PS3 only" thing until after I'd posted this.

As far as greatest all time ever, I'd say Halo 3, just due to the range of stuff you can do. You can play it like a regular Halo game, you can race on Mongooses, you can make your own ridiculous maps, you can play some honor rules RTS type things (one person plays a team monitor in forge), you can dick around with the physics in the game......
