I'm looking to buy a game for about $30.00-40.00 on Steam. Should I get Bioshock, Borderlands, Mass Effect, City of Heroes, or something else?

Well, some questions to your question:

1. Have you played Bioshock, and if you haven't, has the story been spoiled for you?

2. Do you like Bioware's other games? (Baldurs Gate, KOTOR, Jade Empire, etc)

3. Do you have friends to play Borderlands/CoH with?

4. What other games do you own/like? I can think of several games I could recommend more highly than those you listed, assuming you're into those styles and you haven't tried them yet.

Then in my opinion, don't bother. Unless you're a big fan of shooter-rpg's, in which case Vampire the Masquerade or Deus Ex would serve you better.

If you also enjoy Sci-fi, then I heartily recommend ME if you haven't played them yet. It's a fantastic series. Though for some reason, some people hate the first but love the second, and others are vice versa. Try out the demos maybe before you buy them, though I love them and would say you should get both.

Without friends to play with Borderlands and most MMO's stand poorly on their own. Maybe you could rent borderlands, but when I played solo it got old very quick.

If you like older isometric RPG's (like Baldur's Gate), I'd say check out the first two Fallouts, Arcanum or Planescape Torment. The first two can be found on Steam and GOG.com, though Planescape you'll have to buy a copy from Amazon or something, but I'd say that it is worth the effort, as one of my favorite games.

For RTS, Dawn of War (Dark Crusade from the first game or Chaos Rising from the second), one of the Total War series or Age of Empires are all good choices and I'm fairly certain all can be found on steam.

And because I'm contractually obligated, if you like adventure games: Beyond Good and Evil, Machinarium and Longest Journey are all brilliant, and like 10 bucks.

Whew. That's all I got.
