Let's talk genres.

RPG. Shooter. Side-scrolling platformer. Platformer. RTS. TBS. You get the idea.

What games in your opinion top a genre with unprecedented skill?

My entry would be Rayman 2: The Great Escape for 3D platformers everywhere.

What games do you think top genres? Also, try not to turn this into a flamewar...

For fps - COD4 because it's the best FPS I've ever played, for multiplayer that is.
For RPG - Morrowind or Fallout 3 or Oblivion, I'm a fan of bethesda games you see... But I couldn't decide between these 3
For RTS - Seeming as I didn't quite love starcraft as much as everyone else, either Warcraft 3 or Age of empires 2 ( which I WISH I still had)
Also, wow was the only good MMO I ever played in the long run, and I played most of them

The best game in a genre changes so fast I haven't really bothered to rank them anymore. I just think of the games that were good and the games that weren't. If two games are vying for "best" in that genre, by golly I'm going to play both!

But for the sake of the thread. Best MMO: World of Warcraft, simply by sheer popularity. I don't care for the game myself, but it's massive long-running popularity is clear evidence of how good the game is, I'm not going to dispute it's quality!

I think Team Fortress 2 tops the FPS genre, as the updates keep me playing and it is just fun
I have to agree. TF2 is just a damn good game.

Um...how on Earth should I know? I haven't played every game in any specific genre. All I can say is my favorites, and unlike a lot of people, I don't equate my favor with top quality.

I will be amazed if I find an Adventure-style visual novel that beats Fate/Stay Night, though.

One word: Psychonauts
To elaborate on this, a statement I [think I] agree with...

Psychonauts, to me, is a staple platformer. I've found it is what a good platformer should be, varied in environments and challenges while peppered with a quirky and entertaining atmosphere. It features fantastic writing with charming characters to suit them, each one sporting his or her own well-flushed out personality. The only platformer to truly rival this, in my opinion, was Banjo-Kazooie, which was a game waaaay ahead of its time as I consider Psychonauts to have been.

FPS: Cod4. just amazing.
RTS: Age of Mythology. wish there was a sequel.
TBS: Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (BEST GAME EVARR).
RPG: Titan Quest. defines "Epic".
MMO: WoW. its just so much fun, and so much to do.
Platformer: Spyro: Year of the Dragon. i wish Insomniac could make another good Spyro game, the ones since A New Beginning has sucked bollocks.

For now, genres are topped by following:

FPS: Half-Life 2 and Episodes.
RTS: Supreme Commander.
3D Platformer/Action Adventure: Ratchet & Clank series. Even from here,i can see their awesomeness.
Puzzle Platformer: Braid. Just... Braid.
Artillery game: Worms Armageddon/Worms World Party.

FPS- Half-Life 2. I can't believe so many of you said TF2, it's a fun game, sure- but really? That game got old for me after less than a month.
RTS- I didn't think Starcraft was all that amazing either, personally I preferred Red Alert 2, but have to give credit where credit is due and Starcraft is huge.
RPG- I'm not an RPG guy, the only RPG I ever enjoyed was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, but WoW obviously has the numbers.
