I Recently bought a new computer (with the Nvidia). One that has a faster cpu and more RAM than my old one (with the Sapphire). but I do not know whether to swap out my new computer's graphics card for my old computer's one (my old one i am going to give to my old man)

WUT SHOULD I DO ESCAPISTMAN?

Get a mail-in rebate at Fry's or something for about $30 off an nVidia 9600 GT. Then buy said nVidia 9600 GT. Otherwise...

Honestly, both are from the early 2000's. Get a new card, man.

Wait, let me get this straight... You bought a new computer, and it came with an nVidia GeForce 6600???

But to answer the base question, the GeForce 6600 is a generation ahead of the Radeon 9600.
Well, It wasn't exactly 'new'.

'new' as in bought-it-from-and-asian-guy-yesterday 'new'

In layman's terms. it is used.

go with nVidia!! I personally use a 9800GT with my computer
Good card that.

but the 4850 fucks it up the ass.
If I had things my way my computer would cost $10,000, but alas I have yet to win the power ball.

According to my friend, they're both pretty old cards but the nVidia is definately worth keeping.

Ok, I'm assuming that this is an AGP system...dude, those cards are from the year 2000.
It's 2009 as of 2:07 hours ago! (Pacific Time)
Pick up a Radeon X1600 Pro for around 50 bucks...good card.

AGP or a PCI-Express slot? (In other words, what motherboard does it have?) If it's AGP, your upgrade path is seriously limited. Otherwise you could easily buy a new card many times as powerful for relatively small price. (Like a GeForce 9600 GT or a Radeon HD 3870)
The above is a major concern that would greatly help us determine what you need.

If you do have a PCI-E slot, anything nVidia in the 7000 series or greater (ending in 500+) and has more than 256MB of RAM will do you fine for a few years.

If you have Vista, you will need one with DirectX 10, nVidia cards in the 8000 series or greater (again ending with 500+).

As for AGP, well, it will be expensive to get anything current that runs through AGP.

I was able to get a 9500GT with 1GB of RAM for $40 on NewEgg, so video cards are not expensive.

Edit: Sorry to all the ATI fans, I've had too many nightmares with ATI cards to begin to mention (driver problems, multiple monitor problems, etc.)

I would by a graphics card if I had the money.

Over here in New Zealand we have some retarded law that states 'All Electronics must be sold 5 times the american retail price'

A 9500GT costs $390 over here

I hate this country.

I wasn't aware that NewEgg doesn't ship internationally until I just now checked. Sounds like you may be in a bit of a pickle, therefore, keep the nVidia over the ATI.

The 6600GT is waaaaay ahead of the 9600. It's probably on par with a Radeon 9800GTX. I still have one in my old box. I bought the card in 2003, 2004 or so. It's a pretty decent card. Best bang for your buck a few years ago. I could run Hellgate London on mediun with it, with a P4 2.66, 1 GB of PC2700 RAM.

Mine is AGP and also has a DVI-out port, so I could even hook it up to my modern monitor.

A really good card is the HD 4870. But that's ultra-high performance.
Try an 8800GT or something.
